The XTERRA Trail Run World Series invites all trail enthusiasts to join the XTERRA community as we connect, explore, and discover new and existing trails in idyllic running terrains the world over. From the tropical trails of Asia-Pacific to the narrow ridges of Europe's mountain peaks and through the dusty desert trails in parts of the USA, the XTERRA Trail Run World Series is a global journey designed to connect runners who truly live to explore.
Qualifying races are open to all runners, from amateur to elite, but those looking for the ultimate challenge at the invite-only XTERRA Trail Run World Championship must earn their place on the starting line by claiming one of the limited slots available at every XTERRA Trail Run World Series race.
TRAIL RUN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFICATION
Every race in the XTERRA Trail Run World Series serves as a qualifying race for the Trail Run World Championship, with each race offering a limited amount of championship slots to top performances within each age division.
Most races within the series offer 58 World Championship slots per distance (Half and Full Marathon), while larger, more competitive events offer 116. Slots are split equally between men and women, and distributed across fourteen age divisions, based on five year segments. THE XTERRA PASS PROGRAM
The XTERRA Pass program offers trail runners the opportunity to earn a place on the starting line at the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship by supporting local trail run races.
Through the XTERRA Pass Program, trail run races that meet the distance requirements for a Half or Full Marathon but are not yet officially part of the XTERRA Trail Run World Series will be allocated up to 28 XTERRA Passes that will be awarded to top performing age group athletes.

Prize Money
Prize money is awarded to the top three male and female athletes at the Regional Championships and at the Trail Run World Championship. Each of the three regional championships have a prize pool of US$5,200 and the Trail Run World Championship has a total prize pool of US$10,000.

World Championship
The 15th edition of the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship will return for a second time to the top-tier trails of Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine, USA on September 1st, 2024, where cool autumn weather and diverse competition from multiple nationalities around the world will once again greet those ready to run themselves into the XTERRA history books.
In 2023, Sugarloaf Mountain played host to the fist ever qualification-only XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, a day where Mason Coppi and Caitlin Patterson were crowned as XTERRA’s first Full Distance Trail Run World Champions, Rachel Tomajczyk and Andy Wacker became the Half Marathon World Champions, and the current reigning champions of every age division claimed their titles.
The pinnacle event of the series is now set to return to Sugarloaf over the Labor Day weekend, from August 30 to September 1, 2024, drawing hundreds of competitors to the well-worn trails in pursuit of their share of the $10,000 prize money and the title of 2024 XTERRA Trail Run World Champion.

The XTERRA Trail Run World Series Rankings is a custom system where each trail runner is awarded points based on factors such as distance, participation, and segment speeds. Earn more points by racing more, or going further and see how you stack up against the rest of the XTERRA Trail Running community world-wide. Rankings will be updated the week following each event.

THE SEGMENT CHALLENGE
Available in select races, including the Trail Run World Championship, segment challenges offer additional series ranking points to the top 20 speedsters, climbers and downhill bombers over defined sections of the course.

Segment challenges will be indicated on the event page, so check the event details, play to your skills, and choose your moment to show what you’re made of. Runners have the ability to win one, two, or all three segment challenges.
