Lake Molveno, Trentino, Italy
Lake Molveno, Trentino, Italy
Overview
WELCOME TO THE DOLOMITES
For the first time in 25 years, the XTERRA World Championship will be moving from the sparkling shores of Hawaii to the awe-inspiring terrain of Trentino, where the best of the best will go head to head for the title of XTERRA World Champion beneath the staggering peaks of the Brenta Dolomites.
Set in a must-visit destination for any outdoor adventurer and with a course that is as exciting as it is challenging, there is little doubt that Trentino will deliver one of the most exciting World Championships yet. The event combines a 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) swim that starts at the shore of Lake Molveno, the most beautiful lake in Italy, a 29-km/18.1-miles (two loops of 14.5-km /9-miles ) mountain bike ride that climbs a total of 800m+ (2,630 feet) through natural forest and the amazing landscape of the Brenta Dolomites, and a 10 km/6.2-miles (two loops of 5 km /3.1-miles) scenic trail run course that winds through the shores and forest of Lake Molveno.
The event will mark an important milestone in the XTERRA journey and we encourage all off-road runners, riders, and adventure seekers of all shapes and forms to join us in Trentino for this historic championship.
WHO: The world’s best professional and amateur off-road triathletes
WHEN: Saturday, October 1, 2022
WHERE: On the shore of Lake Molveno in Trentino, Italy
WHY: The XTERRA World Championship race is the last in a series of 45 off-road triathlon races held in 22 countries. The concept is to provide a bona-fide world championship for amateur and elite off-road triathletes. For pros there is €100,000 in prize money at stake.
WINNER TAKES ALL
It is a “winner take all” race, with one of the richest pro purses in multisport at € 100,000, and it is awarded solely on the basis of the Molveno performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offers a unique opportunity to competitors as even those who have had a less than stellar season are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn the coveted title of XTERRA World Champion.

For example, if there are 11 finishers in any division at a Silver event, the top TWO will earn qualifying spots. If there are 20 finishers, the top THREE qualify. For Gold events, as an example, if there are 11 finishers in the men’s 35-39 division, the top FOUR qualify.
3. Receive a ROLL-DOWN spot from a 2022 XTERRA World Championship Qualifying Event.
- Initial qualifiers have two weeks to confirm and pay for their slot after their race. If they don’t take their slot, it will roll down to the next person in their division, who will also have two weeks to confirm and pay. This process repeats down to the top 5 eligible athletes in each division at Silver races, and the top 10 in each division at Gold races. Slots may roll further at the discretion of XTERRA officials to account for slot winners who previously qualified and are already registered.
4. The reigning 2021 XTERRA World Champions automatically qualify so they can defend their title in Trentino. The 2022 Champs will be invited to the 2023 World Championship.
5. Legacy slots will be awarded to XTERRA athletes who have raced more than 15 events over the last five seasons, or, raced in 15 or more past XTERRA World Championship races. If you meet either requirement, email entries [at] xterraplanet.com to request a legacy slot.
6. Physically challenged athletes are required to compete in at least one XTERRA World Championship Qualifying Series race then request an entry by emailing entries [at] xterraplanet.com.
7. Athletes may apply for one of the following exemptions (not guaranteed, on case-by-case basis):
- Geographic Exemption: If you live more than 500 miles away from a qualifying event.
- Media/Influencers: Accredited journalists and influencers with a letter of assignment and/or verified reach, and proven athletic ability.
- Discretionary: The XTERRA World Championship committee will consider unique appeals on a case-by-case basis. To make a case for a qualifying spot, email entries [at] xterraplanet.com with a detailed explanation in English or French.

Rules
To race in Italy it is necessary to have a Triathlon license.
OPTION 1: You must have a valid license issued by your country's Triathlon Federation. Show it at the Race Office on site during the race weekend.
OPTION 2: You don’t have a valid license of your Triathlon Federation, you can buy a daily license issued by FITRI (Italian Triathlon Federation) on site.
In order to receive your FITRI one-day-license you need to:
- Bring a medical certificate for the practice of triathlon. In order to meet all legal requirements, the medical certificate must be issued by an authorized Italian center for sports medicine, NOT OLDER THAN 1 year on the race day and with the compulsory mention: "for triathlon".
- Present a ID or passport
- Pay 20 € for Age-Group athletes (cash only)*
According to Italian law and the regulations, an Italian medical certificate is compulsory to obtain a sports license in Italy. These obligations apply to every organizer of any kind of competition and all sports.
To meet these needs, we therefore recommend, to register with your national triathlon federation and to bring your membership card with you to the Race Office.
There will be a doctor available to issue the medical certification for non federation license holders in Molveno.
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE ON SITE
Where: Molveno, ground floor Centro Congressi/Piscine di Molveno
When: 30 september 11:00/19:30

Short FAQ: You will need to show your valid triathlon license to race. If you do not have a valid triathlon license, you will need to (at your expense) obtain a certificate specific to triathlon from an authorized Italian medical provider to be able to purchase a FITRI Day License.
Accommodations
DOLOMITI PAGANELLA
A real oasis of peace, Dolomiti Paganella is embedded between the vertical rock faces and the peaks of the Brenta Dolomites, a UNESCO Natural Heritage site, and the green slopes of Paganella. From the top of Paganella, you have a view of the whole region of Trentino, from the eastern Dolomites to the Valle dell’Adige and from the Brenta Dolomites to the Garda Lake. The whole area is part of the Adamello Brenta Geopark, Trentino’s largest protected area, and is rich with both flora and fauna. It is even home to about a hundred bears.
Dolomiti Paganella is an ideal destination for both a summer and winter holiday. Winter is mostly focussed on skiing activities, with 50 km of perfectly snow-covered slopes, suited for all skiers. Paganella’s ski slopes have been chosen from the Men’s Norway National Alpine Ski Team for their training.
During summer in Dolomiti Paganella you can really enjoy the peace, and can relax on the beautiful beach of Molveno Lake. You may also enjoy some sports and outdoor activities such as mountain biking, hiking, climbing, paragliding, horse riding and various watersports.
Dolomiti Paganella is also known for its culture and gastronomy, from the high-quality wines of Piana Rotaliana, homeland of the well-known red wine Teroldego Rotaliano, to the “ciuiga”, a turnip salami from San Lorenzo in Banale.
MOLVENO
Molveno is the true pearl of the Brenta Dolomites. Located on the shores of Lake Molveno, it is 864 meters above sea level and surrounded by a green expanse of fir and beech forests.
With the Brenta Dolomites peaks mirrored in the crystal clear waters of the lake, Molveno guarantees breathtaking landscapes.
It is a tourism destination steeped in ancient traditions where hospitality is very important: the historic centre is closed to traffic, the park is equipped to entertain children, the beach and the Olympic swimming pool are carefully maintained. Moreover, the destination offers a wide variety of high quality accommodation facilities.
If you love water, this is the place to be! In addition to the lake, in Molveno you will find streams and small waterfalls. The combination of mountain and lake allows you to add exciting water sports to your agenda, in addition to mountain activities. In addition the Alpine climate influenced by the presence of the Lake is always mild, suitable for long walks in the countryside with the spectacular scenery of the Dolomites as a backdrop.
ANDALO
At 1040 meters above sea level, 40 km away from the city of Trento you can find Andalo, a lovely mountain town between the peaks of Brenta Dolomites and the pine forests of the Paganella mount.
A distinctive feature of Andalo is its historical heritage: the 14 independent “masi'' have developed over time and have led to the creation of an excellent tourist centre, that is nowadays able to offer a wide range of accommodation facilities. Additionally, Andalo's, efficient and modern infrastructure allows it to successfully meets the demands of a variety of tourists by means of an exhaustive offering of services and activities, providing the perfect mix of relaxation, sports and entertainment.
Thanks to its location at the feet of Mount Piz Galin and Mount Paganella, Andalo is ideally suited for both summer and winter activities: especially for hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and many other exciting activities in summer, and skiing on Mount Paganella’s ski slopes in the winter season.
Last but not least, Andalo is a truly family-friendly tourism destination, as it offers a wide range of activities specifically designed for kids.
