APAC'S Premier Off-Road Triathlon Series

The XTERRA APAC Tour consists of 6 of the toughest off-road triathlons on the calendar to decide the strongest and fastest age group athletes in all of Asia-Pacific. Up against some of the most beautiful yet brutal terrains, from the rocky mountains of tropical Taiwan to the lakes and jungles of New Zealand to the white sands and blue lagoons of Tahiti, the Asia-Pacific Tour pits racer vs nature to determine who will be crowned tour champion of the Asia-Pacific region.

To be crowned champion, athletes must compete for points using the XTERRA World Performance Index - a proprietary, formula-driven system that delivers a score for every finisher based on factors such as field strength and depth, number of participants, elevation, water and air temperature, rainfall, trail conditions, and more.

Those with the highest XTERRA World Performance Index points score at an XTERRA APAC event at the end of the season - by gender and age group - will be named as the new reigning XTERRA Tour Champions of the APAC region.

The tour is open to all amateur off-road triathletes, but athletes must start in at least 2 XTERRA events in two different countries in the Asia-Pacific region to be eligible to be crowned as an XTERRA APAC Tour Champion.

Rules and Qualification

Age Groups

The age groups that form part of the regional tours are: 18-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+, and Physically Challenged. Your age on December 31 determines your age group.

Race Participation

You must start at least two (2) XTERRA World Championship qualifying events in the APAC region to be eligible for XTERRA APAC Tour Champion honours. There is no limit to how many races you can do, but only races in the APAC region count towards APAC Tour titles. The season spans the entirety of the calendar year, from the first race of the season to the last.

Score

You will receive an XTERRA World Performance Index points score at every event you compete in. You will also receive a loyalty bonus score, which is one point for each race you participate in beyond the minimum required (2). Your final score is your highest WPI score plus your loyalty bonus as a percentage.
Example: Your highest WPI score is 195, and you participate in 4 races, so your loyalty bonus is 2. Your final score is 195 + 2% = 198.9.

Tour Champion

The athlete with the highest final score at the end of the season - by gender and age group - earns the title of XTERRA APAC Tour Champion.

Tie Breakers

If there is a tie in the final score in the division, the tie-breaker will be the person finishing highest in the most recent race where both competed. If no head-to-head exists, the tie-breaker will be the person with the most tour wins. If still tied after counting wins, tie-breaker goes to the person finishing highest in the most recent race.

FAQS

What age group am I in?

The XTERRA age groups are 14-15*, 16-17*, 18-19*, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+, and Physically Challenged. Note: Your age on December 31 determines your age group. The 14-15 and 16-17 age groups do not form part of the regional tours. Youth athletes who wish to compete in tour races will have to do so under the 18-19 age-group, if allowed by the governing federation and/or the race director.

Am I allowed to compete at a Regional Tour that my nationality is not part of?

Yes! Nationalities are not taken into account for Regional Tours. As long as you compete at the minimum number of required races you will be ranked for that tour. You can even participate in more than one Regional Tour in the same year.

How many races do I have to do to qualify for Tour honors?

In the Americas and EMEA Regions, you must start at least three events. In the Asia-Pacific Region, you must start at least two (2) XTERRA events in two different countries. There is no limit to how many races you can do, but only races in the region count towards Tour titles.

When does the season start and finish?

The season spans the entirety of the calendar year, from the first race of the season to the last. See tour schedule above. Note that dates marked as tentative may be changed.

How is my score calculated?

At every full and long-distance XTERRA World Championship qualifying race you will receive an XTERRA World Performance Index points score. You will also receive a loyalty bonus, which is one point for each race you participate in beyond the minimum required. Your final score will be your highest WPI score plus your loyalty bonus as a percentage.

If some events score higher than others, wouldn’t this mean the winners will most likely just be the winners of the event? Or do all events have the same scoring potential?

There is a chance the winners will be the ones who win their division at the race giving the highest points of the tour, but a) we don’t know what races will award the highest points until the season is over, and b) you’ll still have to compete at 3 World Championship qualifying events in EMEA and the Americas, and 2 in 2 different countries in the Asia-Pacific region to qualify. Additionally, athletes participating in more races than the minimum required receive loyalty points that may make a difference (ie: an athlete competing at 7 races during the year will receive 4 loyalty points that will add 4% to his highest WPI).

Do I have to keep track of my score, or do you?

We will keep track of your score and tour standings will be updated after each race as soon as the data is verified. Usually within a week of the race, if not sooner.

Can I see the formula you use?

Nope. That would be like Colonel Sanders giving away the secret recipe!

So, is my final score the average of my three scores?

No, it’s your single highest score of the three you raced in your region plus your loyalty points if you participate in more than the required number of races.

Do sprint races or any other formats count towards regional titles?

No. Only full and long-distance races count towards regional titles.

I'm in my division racing for the Tour title. Will one of my races have to be a Championship (Asia-Pacific, European or North American) race in order to win the Tour Title?

Not necessarily, no. In fact, there are many examples in the past of both male and female age group athletes from various divisions that have scored higher racing at events other than a Championship race. This applies to all regional tours.

So what role does a Championship (Asia-Pacific, European, or North American) race play in winning the Tour title?

A Championship race (Asia-Pacific, European or North American) is a head-to-head battle to see who is the best on the day. The winner in every division is declared the XTERRA (Asia-Pacific, European or North American) Champion in the (20-24 Division, for example). The Tour title is awarded to an eligible athlete with the best single WPI score over the course of the entire season. This applies to all regional tours.

How and when are the Tour winners decided?

The athlete with the highest score in each age group and gender of the tour at the end of the season earns the title of XTERRA Tour Champion for their region.

What difference is there between World Performance Index, WPI World Rankings and Regional Tour Rankings?

The WPI is a formula-driven scoring system that ranks every athlete who competes at an XTERRA World Championship qualifying event based on the strength and depth of field, number of participants, difficulty of the course and your finishing time. It is related to the race only. The WPI World Rankings are calculated averaging the athlete's best 2 WPI scores from the last 24 months. It allows any athlete to compare his/her level of performance to all the other athletes in the World. Regional Tours Rankings are based on athlete's highest WPI score from the season, plus a loyalty bonus that awards athletes who race consistently over the season.

Is there a prize for becoming a Tour Champion?

There is no physical award presented to the tour champions. Newly crowned champions will have their name's published on their regional tour page for the following year, and their status of tour champion will be reflected on their rankings profile page.
