Competitors head into the forest for 1km then turn right to follow back along the backside of the Blue Lake for 2km and to the starting point, completing one lap. The second lap takes competitors along Tarawera Road again, but this time only for 500m, before turning right down the Blue Lake single track foreshore trail. At the end of this trail walkers arrive at the south end beach of the Blue Lake where they will climb the stairs up to the lookout point parking lot.
