What is the difference between the Open category and World Championship races?

The main difference lies in eligibility and the opportunity to compete for the title. The World Championship races are exclusive to participants who have qualified by winning a slot at an XTERRA event. These participants compete for the chance to become World Champion. In contrast, the Open category allows anyone to race on the same course as the World Championship, but without the opportunity to win the World Champion title, prize money, or attend the awards function.

Who can participate in the World Championship races?

Only those who have qualified by winning a slot at an XTERRA event are eligible to participate in the World Championship races.

Who can participate in the Open category races?

The Open category is open to anyone who wishes to race on the same course as the World Championship participants. No prior qualification is required.

How can I qualify for the World Championship races?

To qualify for the World Championship races, you must compete in an XTERRA event and win a slot that grants you the opportunity to compete for the World Champion title. For more information on how to qualify, click here.

If you feel that you should have qualified for the 2025 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship but haven't received your official invitation, please email trailrun@xterraplanet.com before May 10, 2025.

Why is the World Championship entry fee higher than the open race?

Entrants into the World Championship receive World Championship Swag and memorabilia, Invitations to World Championship Celebratory functions and eligibility to World Championship titles and prize money

Will participants in the Open category receive the same finishing medals and gear as those in the World Championship races?

No, participants in the Open category will receive different finishing medals and gear, distinguishing them from those competing in the World Championship races.

What happens if I register for the Open Race and qualify for the World Championship during the season?

If you qualify for the World Championship during the season, please contact us at trailrun@xterraplanet.com for further instructions.

Is the Ultra Distance part of the XTERRA World Championship?

No, only the Half and Full Marathon distances are part of the XTERRA World Championship.

Can I defer or get a refund if I am injured or unwell?

For the World Championship Race (via Active Endurance):
If you Active Refund when you registered, you need to check your confirmation email to get your Reference ID and submit a request here.
For the Open Races (via Etchrock platform):
If you took out Refund Protect insurance when you bought your ticket you need to check your confirmation email and follow the details contained. You will deal with the insurance company directly to claim your refund.

If you did not take out Active Refund or Refund Protect insurance, please refer to the guidance under ‘I can no longer take part, what are my options?’

I am no longer able to take part, what are my options?

For the World Championship Races:
There are NO REFUNDS, TRANSFERS, or DEFERRALS on entry fees. It will not be possible to upgrade or downgrade into the Half or Full Marathon World Championship unless you have previously qualified for the 2025 event. Additional fees will be charged if there is an upward difference in price.

Medical exceptions will be considered, but not guaranteed. Email a written request with your name, event name, and reason for the request accompanied by a valid medical certificate. Active Refund is highly recommended and available for purchase during checkout.
For the Open Races:
Option 1: Transfer to another competitor

You may transfer or sell your place to another person wishing to take part in the event. This can be done free of charge, at least ONE calendar month prior to the event via your Etchrock account, details of which can be found on your entry confirmation email.

If there is less than 30 days before the event, transfers to another competitor must be made at registration at the event and will occur a £10 admin fee. Only the participating athlete needs to attend registration to complete the transfer.

Transfers between athletes must be completed through the correct channel so that we have the correct participant information and contact details in the event of an accident. DO NOT give your bib to someone without completing an official transfer. Running on another athlete’s bib contradicts NGB rules and will result in disqualification.

Option 2: Ticket Deferral
- If there is at least one calendar month before the event you can defer your entry and receive credit to your Etchrock booking system account for the amount paid, minus a £10 admin fee.
- You can use this credit to enter the same event the following year or any event that comes before it.
- A ticket cannot be deferred more than once.
- Deferrals may be used against entries of a higher value, on payment of the difference.
- Deferrals can only be used against a single transaction and cannot be exchanged for cash. No change or refund will be given.

Do I need a UK Athletics License?

Yes. It is a requirement to have a UK Athletics license to participate in the 2025 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship.

If you already have a valid UK Athletics license, please input your current license number in the space provided. Otherwise, you may purchase a £2 one-day license during the registration process.

You will not be able to race without this validation. If you have questions, please contact trailrun@xterraplanet.com.

When is the cut-off time for registration?

Unless the event sells-out beforehand, the last day for registrations will be Thursday the 10th of July 2025.

What are the Race Rules?

XTERRA Snowdonia events are run under UK Athletics Rules

Is there any Compulsary Kit?

All competitors must carry compulsory kit. The lists can be found on the page for the specific race distance. This kit is for your safety due to the often unpredictable and quickly changing mountain conditions and isolated nature of the route. Spot checks will be in place and anybody found without the required kit will not be allowed to race.

Is there a minimum age to take part in this event?

The minimum age may vary for each race distance due to the National Governing Body guidelines. Please select the distance from the event page to find specific Minimum Age requirements along with other race information.

Do you offer Charity Places?

We work very closely with a number of charities to support their fundraising. If you are a charitable organisation, please contact us for further information.

Do you have a waiting list?

When an event sells out there will be an option to join a waiting list. Once a space becomes available you will be emailed, you will then have 24 hours to purchase the space before this is offered to the next person on the list.

I have a disability, can I still participate?

We are keen to make our events as accessible and inclusive as possible, however, due to the location of some of our events and the course terrain there may be limitations. Please contact us at info@alwaysaimhighevents.com to discuss your requirements and how we could support you.

Do you provide nutrition?

Yes. Water, energy drinks and gels are available at drink stations. Please see online route maps for approximate feed station locations. The most up to date information will be detailed in your final instructions.

Do you have cut-off times?

Please select the distance from the event page to find any cut-off times for the race along with other information. Cut-off times are in place for the safety of the athletes and our marshals.

Can I use walking poles?

You are permitted to carry and use walking poles if you wish to.

Can I use headphones?

The use of bone conduction headphones is permitted. Use of any other headphones is prohibited. This ruling is at the Race Directors' discretion in line with UKA rules due to runners needing to pass on single-track trails.

What is the best way to travel there?

TRAIN

Direct services (including Trains from London to Bangor) take you to the popular North Wales coastal destinations from most parts of Britain.

The closest station to Llanberis is Bangor, which is just under 10 miles away. A taxi from here will cost approximately £30 or the Sherpa S2 bus will take you from the station and cost between £3-£5. It is possible to cycle.

There’s quick, straightforward access from the North West along the M56 and A55. Motorway links with the Midlands are good too, and the same roads – the M6, M5 and M1 – also bring Eryri (Snowdonia) within easy reach of the South of England.

Where can I park?

Parking information is included in your Final Instructions which will be emailed to you at least 10 days prior to the event.

We will provide low-cost parking for the duration of the event on the outskirts of Llanberis. Please be aware that parking within the residential areas should be avoided, use only official event or council car parks when attending the event.

How can people volunteer?

We are always looking for people to join our amazing team of event volunteers and marshals.

Marshalling can be a great way to get involved, enjoy the atmosphere and spend time with friends, as well as meeting new ones. Time after time our athletes tell us it's the marshals' support and enthusiasm that makes the event for them - we are known to have the BEST event marshals in the world!

From feed stations to directing runners, managing transition, tail ending or giving out medals on the finish line we will help find a job that suits you and welcome anyone of any age and even dogs (in certain positions). Many clubs and community groups join in and tell us it's a great team bonding experience as well as a lot of learning for younger members and a great way to raise funds for their club or group.
