Event Location
Welcome to Maine!

Maine is all about nature. Its coastline spans over 3,000 miles with rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and iconic lighthouses. Inland, you'll find dense forests, pristine lakes, and the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain in central Maine which boasts over 60 miles of scenic trails, spanning from 1,417 to 4,237 feet in elevation. As you traverse this natural landscape, you'll encounter tree-lined trails, bubbling streams, and unexpected vistas. Sugarloaf Mountain is one of the most prominent outdoor recreation destinations in the northeastern United States.

Whether you crave coastal beauty, mountain adventures, or serene forests, Maine delivers an unforgettable experience for anyone who craves movement or relaxation. The diverse landscapes, rich biodiversity, and dedication to preserving its natural heritage makes Maine's commitment to conservation well respected in their efforts to preserve wildlife and natural resources for future generations.

Inland Maine in the fall is characterized by vibrant natural colors, excellent opportunities for scenic drives, hikes, runs and mountain bike rides. Apple picking, harvest festivals, and the peacefulness of its lakes and rivers invites people from all walks of life to enjoy as they see fit.

Weather Conditions

As we move into the fall season with its fantastic display of colors, we need to be cautious of what the weather may have in store for us.

In the early days of fall, you can expect pleasant temperatures with daytime highs averaging in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit (15-25°C). You may also notice a gradual cooling trend, especially during the evenings, when temperatures can drop into the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit (4-15°C).

For fall weather in Maine, layering is essential. Start with a long-sleeved shirt with the option to add a sweater, topped by a versatile jacket or coat. Choose pants or jeans for your lower half. Pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket or raincoat for possible showers. Good socks and close-toed shoes are recommended for keeping your feet warm and dry.

Consider carrying a small backpack for these extra layers and throw some healthy snacks in there for extra fuel to temporarily raise your body temperature, giving you an extra sensation of warmth when you need it.

If you would like to explore the historical weather a bit further, you may look here.

Race courses
Course Maps and Details
5K Trail Course
For families seeking a memorable outdoor adventure, XTERRA offers delightful 5-kilometer race that is perfect for all ages and fitness levels. These races are designed with a focus on enjoyment, making them ideal for families to participate in together.
10K Trail Course
The 10KM course provides a picturesque introduction to trail running, offering a relatively easy and accessible path through scenic terrain. It's the perfect choice for runners looking to experience the thrill of the XTERRA series without the demands of longer distances.
Half Marathon Course
XTERRA Trail Run World Championship's half marathon distance, covering 21km of breathtaking terrain. This race, known as the shorter distance in the series, promises an exciting blend of speed and natural beauty.

The journey begins with an invigorating start, featuring a steep climb that will test your determination right from the get-go. However, don't be deterred, as this course is intentionally designed to be less technical, ensuring that runners can maintain their speed and momentum throughout. While you'll face challenges, they won't hinder your ability to experience the thrill of racing through the rugged outdoors.

The Race will start under the XTERRA Start/Finish Arch on Main Street in the Sugarloaf Village area. After an open first half kilometer to spread out the field, runners quickly turn onto singletrack and get right to work ascending the steep, rocky Rookie River trail. From there it is a series of dirt roads and trails climbing to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain for a total of 750 meters gained in the first 5k. After the summit, it’s a screaming descent of varying terrain and trail types - ski trails, access roads and singletrack back down Sugarloaf Mountain. At 9k runners will join the rolling trails of the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center for a mix of more singletrack and doubletrack trails.

At the 15k mark, the marathon course splits off and half-marathoners run the banks of the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center moose pond. From here a mix of singletrack and wider paths will steadily  ascend back to the finish area and the party on Main Street!

Final cut off time is 14:30 (6 hours).
Full Marathon Course
XTERRA Trail Run World Championship's marathon distance, an epic 42km of unparalleled trail running.

The journey begins with an invigorating start, featuring a challenging ascent that will immediately put your determination to the test. With a total elevation gain of approximately 1300 meters, this course presents a significant uphill challenge. However, the trail remains non-technical, ensuring that you can maintain your speed and flow even as you conquer the elevations.

This race, boasting a longer course, promises a thrilling blend of speed and rugged beauty.

The Race will start under the XTERRA Start/Finish Arch on Main Street in the Sugarloaf Village area. After an open first half kilometer to spread out the field, runners quickly turn onto singletrack and get right to work ascending the steep, rocky Rookie River trail. At 9k runners will join the rolling trails of the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center for a mix of more singletrack and doubletrack trails.

At the 15k mark, the half-marathon course splits off and full marathoners will continue downhill, across the highway and connect to the banks of the Carrabassett River. There is an opportunity  to stretch  the legs out as the course continues for 5k along  the river with a mix of singletrack trails and walking paths along an old railroad bed. Next is a  steady 7k climb on the Narrow Gauge Bypass trail with some epic views back across the valley to Sugarloaf. At 28k is the race’s second-half summit at the Stratton Brook Hut aid station. From  there, it’s a screaming, windy descent all the way back down to the river and back to the highway crossing.

At the 35k mark runners will reconnect to the half-marathon course at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center moose pond. From here a mix of singletrack and wider paths will steadily  ascend back to the finish area and the party on Main Street!

Your Race Pack

On check-in, all athletes will receive their race pack containing the following:

  • Bib
  • Safety pins
  • Race Swag

Please use the pins to securely fasten your bib to the front of your shirt. It is important that your bib number is clearly visible throughout the race. Your racing chip is on the back of your bib, so keeping the number intact is crucial.

Medical Certificate and Licences

Athletes will not be required to provide any sort of medical certificate of licence to participate.

Race Day Information
Bring your Gear and Put on Your Bib

On race day, you only need to get yourself to the start-line with your running gear, with your bib safely fastened to the front of your shirt or top. Don't forget to double check your gear.

Wearing your race bib correctly is crucial to ensure a smooth and organized race experience. To properly wear your race bib, follow these simple steps. First, secure your bib to the front of your running shirt or outer layer. It should be centered and pinned at all four corners to prevent it from flapping or falling off during the race. Make sure it lies flat and is clearly visible to race officials and photographers. Avoid folding or crumpling the bib to maintain its readability. Additionally, ensure that your bib is not covered by clothing or accessories, such as jackets or hydration packs, as this could hinder race officials from identifying you.

Storage Area

Athletes may leave a bag at the bag drop located near the check-in area (located in Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel) for safe-keeping during their race.

Regarding complaints from other runners, it's essential to approach race officials in a respectful and constructive manner. Share your concerns, and let them handle the situation according to the race's established rules and guidelines. Remember that fostering a positive and sportsmanlike environment is a key aspect of any racing event.

Teens To Trails - Life Happens Outside

XTERRA is honored to be working with Teens to Trails as our beneficiary partner. Teens to Trails is a non-profit with a mission to connect Maine teens to life-changing outdoor experiences. Research shows that spending time outdoors offers many positive benefits to our mental and physical health and Teens to Trails is committed to improving the whole body health of Maine teens by engaging them in fun, inclusive outdoor experiences.

Working with local schools and community recreation departments, Teens to Trails provides adult and student leaders with training, financial support, and the reliable resources they need to start and sustain an exciting Outdoor Club.

Teens to Trails will be part of the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship weekend festival, so stop by and say hello. Find out ways you can help Maine teens gain the benefits of spending time outdoors by visiting https://teenstotrails.org/.  #lifehappensoutside
