Bike Course: 12km

Firstly, we love XTERRA! This XTERRA Sprint course is specifically designed to give newcomers and not-so-fit athletes the opportunity to enjoy and explore our cool sport. The course is not technical, with about 85% consisting of Jeep track and 15% gentle, flowing single track.

To get you warmed up after the swim, the opening 2,5km is wide, flat and gentle. Next up is a flowing single track which takes you past the iconic “Spookhuis”. The Spookhuis signals the start of a long but gentle 3km long climb through the savanna, where the Eland, Warthog and Giraffe typically roam.

If you need refreshments, there is a well stocked Water Point at 6km. From here it's onwards to the finish. A fun mix of flowing single track through the Eucalyptus forest and rolling jeep track. When you hit the brick road, watch out for the speed bumps on the downhill, once on the flat, you’ll sweep past Race Village and cheering fans for a final 1,5km loop to finish the bike leg. Hope you saved some steam for the run course!!

Run Course: 5km

This run course is stunning! It goes right around the Cradle Moon dam and truly embodies XTERRA - tough but achievable, technical but still achievable and, importantly - definitely adventurous. Stunning nature and wildlife all around.

Km 1 is fast, flat and easy. Km 2 is flat and technical on the river bank, with a really cool ladder climb into an old stone fortress. The big cement bridge over the Krokodilrivier is where you’ll find the 2km Water Point. A mellow jeep track takes you to the 3km Waterpoint, where the single track starts - mellow at first, but more and more technical. At 4km the real “vasbyt” starts, where you hit the only significant climb- a rocky single track with rewarding views of the dam. The climb summits at Waterpoint 4,2km - this is my favourite viewpoint, where, if you’re lucky, you can hear the Fish Eagles’ call.

This is the final push the most technical is already behind you - now its almost exclusively single track running at various speeds and difficulty.

The last 500m is exhilarating! Down some rocky stepdown and suddenly you have this huge, loud waterfall above you - congratulations, just a short jaunt through race village and you’ve become an XTERRA Warrior!

Reminder: Good Trail Etiquette:

1) Communicate. If it's too narrow to overtake, say “Please let me through” or “Rider up”. Or, if there is room to just overtake off the main line, clearly say “I’m passing on your right/left”.

2) Overtake when its safe. Once they know you want to overtake, give the slower rider in front time to find a good place to move to the side, so you can safely overtake. If more than 1 person is busy overtaking, say “one more” so they know to let you by. The last person to overtake can say “last one”, so the overtakee knows they can move back onto the main line.

3) Say "Thank you!” We’re here to have fun, XTERRA is a cool sport with cool people, no need to bash elbows or cut riders off like it's the Mountainbike Olympics.
