XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series

Everything is bigger in Texas, including XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series schedule. The busy schedule crosses all over Texas, offering the XTERRA experience to all.

The series kicks off on September 11 with the XTERRA Reveille Peak Trail Run.

Runners will experience seasonal and sometimes crazy weather in the series that starts in the spring and ends in the summer. Claudia Spooner, local running legend and former XTERRA Ambassador, remembers one year where it was really hot, but on race day, the temperature had dropped into the 40s.

“This year it’s been extremely cold, more than it ever has,” Spooner said. “I think it has impacted a lot of training. This last weekend, it was 85 degrees and today it’s 40.”

Preparation can prepare runners for the weather. Spooner said it’s important to have the right gear and attire based on the weather, as well as nutrition planning. Keeping a pair of arm warmers or compression sleeves on hand will help if the weather changes suddenly.

“I think people adjust pretty well because we come right out of winter into racing season,” she said.

The XTERRA Texas Series garnered some national attention in 2012 with the success of pre-teen running sisters Kaytlynn and Heather Welsch. Kaytlynn was the first overall female at the XTERRA Cameron Park Trail Run in August 2012, and Heather placed third overall. Kaytlynn would go on to win her age group (with Heather placing second) at the XTERRA Trail Run National and World Championship races.

“These are great races for their training, and they really love running on the trails,” said their father, Rodney. “If given a choice between a road race and an XTERRA, they’ll pick XTERRA every time.”

Overall standings for the Texas Series will be updated after each race. The top runners in each respective age group will earn points at each race toward the overall standings. At the conclusion of the series, the top runner in each age group will be declared a Texas Series Champion, and will earn a free entry to represent Texas at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.

The more races you enter, the better your chances are of winning an age-group championship.
