XTERRA Atlantic Trail Run Series

The XTERRA Atlantic Trail Run Seriesreturns after a successful 2016 season. The 2017 series is sure to thrive having five races with three in Maryland and two in Delaware.

“Delaware has a strong trail system, ranging from rocky and rooted hilly trails to smooth dirt that is frequented by both runners and mountain bikers,” Atlantic Series co-director Kristen Nicholson said. “Maryland parks are in no shortage, either, as they are all over the place and are all frequently used and raced on. There is a very wide range with the Eastern states presenting some smoother, rolling terrain, and the terrain getting more mountainous as you reach the Appalachian Trail.”

The season starts March 12 at the Brandywine Creek Trail Run in Wilmington, DE with a hilly course with a couple steep climbs and about half the course consists of technical rocks and roots with the other half through rolling grassy trails.. The second race at Seneca Creek on April 9 caught the eyes of Competitor magazine, which named the race to its list of “21 Must-Do Mid-Atlantic Races.”

The XTERRA Lums Pond on May 7 will take place at the Lums Pond State Park while the XTERRA Big Elk event in Elkton, Md. on June 10, will have a marathon and half-marathon courses. It will feature consistently rolling terrain with some roots and rocks. It is mostly forested trails with some open fields and stream crossings.

The finale XTERRA Rosaryville Trail Run is held at Rosaryville State Park, home of the historic Mount Airy Mansion on July 9.

Points will be awarded after each race to the top runners in each respective age group. Standings will be updated throughout the season, and at the conclusion of the series, each age-group winner will receive a free entry to run at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Ogden, Utah, in September.
