How to Participate

XTERRA Olympic Canyon Duathlon, presented by Gatorade Endurance is the third race in the 2020 XTERRA Virtual Race Series and the second duathlon.   Each duathlon will celebrate the home of one of our Regional or World Championships – in this case Utah and the XTERRA USA Championship.

The event will be held over five days - Thursday, September 24 to Monday, September 28, 2020 and  features three legs – a short run, followed by a bike, followed by a longer run.  You can do it all on one day or over several days, and you can do any leg more than once if you wish to improve your time.

Entry is open to individuals or 2-3-person relay teams in your choice of distances:

Full Course – 5k run / 28k bike / 10k run
or
Sprint (Lite) Course – 2k run / 14k bike / 5k run.

Entry is FREE and our virtual race platform is easy to use.  It's a great way to stay active, keep up with your friends and stay connected to the sport we love.

Here's how to participate:

1.    Enter the XTERRA Olympic Canyon Duathlon for free, by signing up at here.
2.    Select Full or Sprint (Lite) distance.
3.    Select Individual or Team (two or three person relay – eg. one biker and one runner or one biker and two runners).  Relay team captains will invite their team members to register as part of their team.  Note: Team captains are responsible for reporting result times for all team members.
4.    Optional: Order the special XTERRA Olympic Canyon Duathlon participant t-shirt and/or finisher medal by adding it to your registration. You can order and pay for your shirt and/or medal up to 24 hours after the race has ended. Delivery will be 8-12 weeks after the conclusion of the Challenge.
5.    Optional:  Add a donation to the XTERRA Foundation for the Trail Foundation of Northern Utah to your registration. TFNU, a non-profit organization, aims to plan, promote, construct, and protect a network of public pathways, trails, and related open spaces for non-motorized users throughout the greater Weber County area.  The XTERRA race course in Utah includes a portion that has been targeted for work by TFNU.  XTERRA will match participant donations up to USD$1,000.
6.    You will receive an email with a link to your XTERRA Virtual Race Passport.  If you don’t already have an XTERRA VR Passport, upload the digital passport to your Instagram or Facebook story and add the unique XTERRA Olympic Canyon sticker by searching “XTERRA” under stickers.  Don’t forget to tag @xterraplanet #xterravr on your story for a chance to be featured on our official Instagram.   If you already have a Passport, you can search for the event stamp under stickers.
7.    Select your own race course.  This is XTERRA, so we encourage you to find some sweet trails to run and ride, but we also realize that might not be an option for everyone right now.  Pick what works best for your situation.  We recommend scouting or pre-riding/running your courses, so you know where to start and stop. You may need to add some distance to your routes or stop before the end of your trails to match the correct distance.
8.    Athletes biking or running on the road must obey the rules of the road.  Use common sense when deciding when and where to participate:

  • Wear reflective gear if competing at dusk or dawn
  • Don’t run or bike in high traffic areas.

9.    You can race the entire event (all 3 legs) on one day, or space each leg out as your schedule allows within the 5-day race period.  You may choose to run your distance(s) more than once over the 5-day period in pursuit of a faster time.
10.    Go out and run your selected first run distance.  Keep track of your run and time using your choice of app.  If you don’t have a tracking app, keep track on a watch.  Be sure to stop your time at the exact distance you signed up for (2k or 5k).
11.    Take a screenshot of your “total time” run results on your tracking app complete with a map of your course.
12.    Go out and ride your selected bike distance.  Non-motorized bikes only and mountain bikes are preferred.  (Bike trainers are OK, but no e-bikes.)  Keep track of your ride time using your choice of app.  If you don’t have a tracking app, keep track on a watch.  Be sure to stop your time at the exact distance you signed up for (28k or 14k).
13.    Take a screenshot of your “total time” bike results on your tracking app complete with a map of your course.
14.    Go out and run your selected second run distance.  Keep track of your run time using your choice of app.  If you don’t have a tracking app, keep track on a watch.  Be sure to stop your time at the exact distance you signed up for (10k or 5k).
15.    Take a screenshot of your “total time” run results on your tracking app complete with a map of your course.
16.    Report your results at any time from September 24 through September 28 at 11:59pm (Hawaii time).  Individuals and team captains go here, and enter their registration number (from your confirmation email) and record times for each leg.  Transition times are NOT scored – input zero (0) for transition time.  Upload one file in support of your times.  If you have three separate files, combine them into a single file using a collage tool and upload the combined file.  Below are links to sites that will merge images:

  • https://pinetools.com/merge-images

If you are in need of assistance, email your images to xvr [at] xterraplanet.com and we’ll return a single file for you to upload.  Upload of results files is the responsibility of the participant. This service is available for emails received by September 28 at 2:00pm Hawaii time.  All results must have one file attachment or they will not be scored.
17.    If you wish to submit a faster time, follow the instructions above and be sure to upload your supporting image.  Only the latest result will be available for approval and display.
18.    We want to see where you bike and run!  Post photos of your journey to your social media using the hashtag @xterraplanet #xterravr.
19.    Final orders for t-shirts and medals must be placed by September 28 at 11:59pm Hawaii time.
20.    We're on the honor system.  We trust you to measure and input times accurately and honestly.  We're all in this together.  Play fair.
21.    Check the leaderboard and results here.  Overall results will be shown for individual men and women, and relay teams.
22.    Your personalized XTERRA Olympic Canyon finisher certificate will be emailed to you on September 29.
23.    If you have questions, email xvr [at] xterraplanet.com
24.    Sign-up for the next XTERRA Virtual Racing event at xterraplanet/xvr.

We look forward to seeing you on the trails and wish you fun racing!

DESTINATION UTAH

It’s long been said that XTERRA is more than just a race, it’s a lifestyle. Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than in Utah where the Ogden City Mayor, Mike Caldwell, was the founder and race director for the first XTERRA Ogden race back in 2004.

UTAH

Mayor Caldwell and a collection of the most welcoming locals to be found anywhere rallied the entire community to bring off-road triathlon to their hometown more than a decade ago and are themselves everyday XTERRA people. They swim, bike, and run in the mountains, have fun, eat well, laugh, and unpretentiously perpetuate the sports’ motto to “Live More.”

Here are just a few of the cool things the XTERRA Family can see, do, and eat in UTAH!

Snowbasin Resort: Just 35 miles north of Salt Lake City, the race venue at Snowbasin is world-class and was home to the downhill and Super G races of the 2002 Winter Olympics. While it is an epic spot for winter sports (think 3,000 skiable acres and 3,000 vertical feet), Snowbasin is also ideal in the summer time and when the Fall colors turn the mountain landscape into a kaleidoscope of colors, it’s simply spectacular.

Historic 25th Street: Right in the heart of downtown Ogden, 25th street has it all with incredible restaurants like Rooster’s Brewing Company, and Tona Sushi Bar & Grill, colorful history and museums at Union Station, an outdoor amphitheater, art galleries, retail shops. The city of Ogden was the first settlement in Utah and today is a notoriously independent community with hundreds of locally owned restaurants, bars and retailers. This city is also a hot spot for skiing, high adventure sports, shopping and a bustling nightlife and dining.

UTAH

For the kids: Get an up-close look at the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex at Ogden’s Dinosaur Park where they have hands on exhibits and eight acres of lifesized dinosaurs in a natural outdoor environment. Also check out the award-winning exhibits and programs at the Treehouse Children’s Museum, and run & ride in XTERRA’s free kids races on Friday, September 15 starting at 4pm.

Utah Olympic Park: Built for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Utah Olympic Park is located in Park City, just 25 miles east of Salt Lake City. The nearly 400-acre venue houses one of only four sliding tracks in North America, six Nordic ski jumps, a 2002 Winter Games museum, and a multitude of adventure activities.

ATV Pailute Trail: South-Central Utah’s 275-mile long trail is a loop with no beginning and no end. It passes through several towns and has side trails leading to others.

White water river rafting: There are 16 rivers to raft in Utah offering varying levels in difficulty on a scale from 1-6.

Ski/snowboard: With an average of 50 annual inches of Utah dry, snow powder, you can be assured you will find great snow conditions on some of the most challenging slopes in the world at 14 ski areas.

Trails: In addition to the course offerings at Snowbasin take some time to ride the east bench of Ogden “home to a spaghetti bowl of singletrack trails,” and the pristine Bonneville Shoreline Trail along the slope of the Wasatch Mountains where the old shoreline of Lake Bonneville met the hills.

UTAH

Discover: Eleven national parks and 170,000 acres of National Forest with more than 210 miles of US Forest Service maintained mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian trails are less than a day’s drive from Ogden. With places like Zion, Canyonlands, Arches, and Moab; Utah is indeed the State of Sport.

- Zion National Park: Utah’s first national park features more than 90 miles of backpacking and hiking trails. Visitors can also go canyoneering down or rock climbing up Zion’s 2,000-foot-tall sandstone cliffs.

- Bryce Canyon National Park: Hiking and horseback riding are great ways to see the sunset-colored rock formations called, hoodoos.

- Arches National Park: Jaw dropping red rock formations, including 2,000-plus natural arches. Some of the parks most popular rock formations include Landscape Arch, the Windows Section, and Fiery Furnace.

- Moab: offers outdoor activities like biking, hiking, off-roading and whitewater rafting. For a bird’s eye view of Moab’s stunning red rock formations, visitors can go skydiving or enjoy a scenic flight in a plane or hot air balloon.

- Great Salt Lake: Visit the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. It is too saline to support fish and most other aquatic species, but brine shrimp and brine flies can tolerate the high salt content and feed on the algae.

Other Scenic locations: https://travel.usnews.com/rankings/best-places-to-visit-in-utah/

Utah Sports Commission: The Utah Sports Commission is not only a huge supporter of XTERRA, but also more than 40 other world-class sporting events across the state. What they do for sports in Utah is amazing, see for yourself at utahsportscommission.com.

The People: Behind all these great things to see and do and eat are the good people of Ogden, led by the GOAL Foundation volunteers who work tirelessly to provide a great experience for all who visit this mountain town.
