Welcome to the Jade Mountain Virtual Duathlon!  Here's how to participate:

1.   Enter the XTERRA Jade Mountain Duathlon for free, by signing up at here.

2.   Select Full or Sprint (Lite) distance.

3.   Select Individual or Team (two or three person relay – eg. one biker and one runner or one biker and two runners).  Relay team captains will invite their team members to register as part of their team.  Note: Team captains are responsible for reporting result times for all team members.

4.   Optional: Order the special XTERRA Jade Mountain Duathlon participant t-shirt and/or finisher medal by adding it to your registration. You can order and pay for your shirt and/or medal up to 24 hours after the Challenge has ended. Delivery will be 8-12 weeks after the conclusion of the Challenge.

5.   Optional: Add a donation to the XTERRA Foundation for the Taiwan Thousand Miles Trail Association (TMI Trail) to your registration. TMI Trail, a non-profit organization established in 2011, aims to preserve natural beauty and create an eco-friendly environment in Taiwan by building and maintaining a network of hiking trails around the island. XTERRA will match participant donations up to USD$1,000.

6.   On August 26, you will receive an email with a link to your official XTERRA Virtual Race Passport.

7.   Upload the digital passport to your Instagram or Facebook story and add the unique XTERRA Jade Mountain Duathlon sticker by searching “XTERRA” under stickers. 8.   Select your own race course. This is XTERRA, so we encourage you to find some sweet trails to run and ride, but we also realize that might not be an option for everyone right now. Pick what works best for your situation. We recommend scouting or pre-riding/running your course so you know where to start and stop. You may need to add some distance to your routes or stop before the end of your trail to match the correct distance.

9.   Athletes biking or running on the road must obey the rules of the road. Use common sense when deciding when and where to participate:

  • Wear reflective gear if competing at dusk or dawn.
  • Don’t run or bike in high traffic areas.

10.   You can race the entire event (all 3 legs) on one day, or space each leg out as your schedule allows within the 5 day race period.

11.   Go out and run your selected first run distance. Keep track of your run and time using your choice of app. If you don’t have a tracking app, keep track on a watch. Be sure to stop your time at the exact distance you signed up for (2k or 5k).

12.   Take a screenshot of your “total time” not “moving time” run results on your tracking app complete with a map of your course.

13.   Go out and ride your selected bike distance. Non-motorized bikes only and mountain bikes are preferred. (Bike trainers are OK, but no e-bikes.) Keep track of your ride time using your choice of app. If you don’t have a tracking app, keep track on a watch. Be sure to stop your time at the exact distance you signed up for (26k or 13k).

14.   Take a screenshot of your “total time” not “moving time” bike results on your tracking app complete with a map of your course.

15.   Go out and run your selected second run distance. Keep track of your run and time using your choice of app. If you don’t have a tracking app, keep track on a watch. Be sure to stop your time at the exact distance you signed up for (10k or 5k).

16.   Take a screenshot of your “total time” not “moving time” run results on your tracking app complete with a map of your course.

17.   We want to see where you bike and run! Post photos of your journey to your social media using the hashtag @xterraplanet #xterravr.

18.   Report your results at any time from August 27 to August 31 at 11:59pm (Hawaii time).  Individuals and team captains go here , and enter their registration number (from your confirmation email) and record times for each leg.  Transition times are NOT scored – input zero (0) for transition time.  Upload one file in support of your times.  If you have three separate files, combine them into a single file using a collage tool and upload the combined file.  Below is a link to site that will merge images:

•    https://pinetools.com/merge-images
•    https://www.photojoiner.net/merge-photos/editor#

If you are in need of assistance, email your images to xvr [at] xterraplanet.com and we’ll return a single file for you to upload.  This service is available for emails received by August 31 at 2:00pm Hawaii time.  All results must have one file attachment or they will not be scored.

19.   Final orders for t-shirts and medals must be placed by September 1 at 11:59pm Hawaii time.

20.   Results submitted without a supporting image will not be accepted (or will be considered unofficial).

21.   We're on the honor system. We trust you to measure and input times accurately and honestly. We're all in this together. Play fair.

22.   Check the leaderboard and results at here. Overall results will be shown for individual men and women, and relay teams.

23.   Your personalized XTERRA Jade Mountain finisher certificate will be emailed to you on September 1.

24.   If you have questions, email xvr [at] xterraplanet.com

25.   Sign-up for the next XTERRA Virtual Racing event.

We look forward to seeing you on the trails and wish you fun racing!

Taiwan Thousand Miles Trail Association

XTERRA Jade Mountain is an opportunity to support Taiwan Thousand Miles Trail Association (TMI).  TMI is non-profit which aims to preserve natural beauty and create an eco-friendly environment in Taiwan by building and maintaining a network of hiking trails around the island.  XTERRA will match participant donations up to USD$1,000.

Taiwan Thousand Miles Trail Association (TMI Trail) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Taiwan through a network of trails across the island.

Jade Mountain

The “Thousand Miles Trail Movement” (TMI Movement) was launched on April 23, 2006 by environmentalist Jen-Shiu Hsu (徐仁修), famous author Yuan Li (小野), and Professor Wu-Hsiung Huang (黃武雄). The movement aims to connect, build and restore a round-the-island network of bikeways, footpaths, and scenic trails for nature loving enthusiasts. In an effort to reach out to like-minded individuals and volunteers, TMI Trail regularly hosts seminars whereby they encourage participants to join eco-trail building and restoration exercises, participate in local environmental and sustainability initiatives, and walk or cycle the trails in order to help reinforce the networks.

The association integrates grass-roots resources of local communities and challenges the stereotype of economic development against nature conservation. TMI Trail wants to revolutionize mainstream developmentalism and expand the network of nationwide trails to provide an eco-friendly space free of motor vehicles. In order to fulfill this mission, “Taiwan Thousand Miles Trail Association” was officially established on April 23rd, 2011 and continues to promote Greenway Connection, Eco-Craft Trail, Eco-Tourism, Community Empowerment and Green Transportation in Taiwan.

Why we love Kenting

It was love at first sight for the XTERRA family when the sport first discovered the people of Taiwan and the splendor of Kenting National Park, home of the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Championship.

“I think I can speak on behalf of everyone who participated in 2018 when I say this is an incredible event and should be on everyone’s bucket list,” said Lewis Ryan, who won the first-ever XTERRA race on the island.  “The landscape is mesmerizing, the atmosphere is beyond words, and as far as race courses go, it’s got to be one of the best, if not the best in the world. The place feels so untouched you wouldn’t be surprised if a dinosaur was waiting around the next corner.”

XTERRA Taiwan

Kenting is on the southern tip of Taiwan and famous for its warm, turquoise water and white-sand beaches that give way to magnificent mountains and natural reserves.
“Following a successful debut race in September of 2018, it was clear Kenting could host a world-class event and provide a magnificent experience for competitors,” said XTERRA President, Janet Clark. “I was impressed with their attention to detail, from the unique cultural experiences like the local song and dance performance at the start of the race to the 750-meters of red carpet they laid down from the beach to transition. Plus, getting in-and-out of Kaoshiung International Airport is a breeze, the fresh seafood is fabulous, the locals are warm and welcoming, and so is the weather and the water.”

The main event starts with a one-mile swim at Little Bay beach with a short run in between two-laps.  The swim-to-bike transition is at the fascinating Kenting Youth Activity Center, which is comprised of 17 different styles of old-world buildings and is a tourist destination all by itself.  Then, the 26-kilometer mountain bike course takes competitors from coastal terrain to rocky riverbeds to uncharted territory high atop MenMaLou mountain. And the final test of endurance is a 10-kilometer trail run through the tranquil and “enchanted forest” of Chihniuling, considered one of the eight wonders of Hengchun.

XTERRA Taiwan

Nico Lebrun, the XTERRA European director, helped design the course.  He also returned to Taiwan to host local coaching clinics to help leaders in the area teach the various disciplines of XTERRA as well as champion the XTERRA motto to “Live More” through a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle.

“After my first trip to Kenting I could tell you it’s a beautiful place, and the perfect location for XTERRA,” said Lebrun. “If you like hot weather, warm water, fresh local food, and strong culture, you will love it here.”

As a tribute to its universal acclaim, the inaugural event was honored as the "Best Off-Road Triathlon in Asia for 2018" by AsiaTRI.com correspondents, who added that last September's race lived up to the expectations of off-road triathletes, and that Kenting National Park is an idyllic outdoor sports paradise.

XTERRA Taiwan

More than just a race, weekend events include an Xticer beginner distance off-road triathlon, trail runs, kids’ races, live music, local cuisine, cultural demonstrations, and entertainment to delight family, friends, spectators and racers alike.

“It was amazing,” said Nicole Walters from the UK after her visit. “I’d never experienced such friendliness and warmth from the locals in all my travels. It’s always nice to visit new places, but it’s the people that make them special.”
