In the spirit of ALOHA, XTERRA Hawai'i Island is inspired to design an experience bringing together the native, visitor and host. With full respect to both the Island of Hawai'i and its residents, its colorful and deeply rooted culture and language, and the needs of the future for all, XTERRA and its Hawai'i Island Ohana visualize a collaboration that will celebrate sustainability, participation, preservation, education, and inspiration.
XTERRA Hawai'i Island Off-Road weekend of events will take place August 15-16, 2020 on the lands surrounding Hapuna Beach State Park. Famous for its beautiful white sand beaches and rugged lands where warrior kings once came to rest and recuperate. A rare opportunity to traverse these lands while competing in one of the most unique and beautiful places in the world... Moku o Keawe (Hawai'i Island).
We've designed a weekend of off-road events that will tempt a wide variety of participants from beginner to advanced. XTERRA merges mother nature with triathlon, trail running, and fitness. It is truly a unique experience to see athletes encouraging each other towards their goals and the finish line. Afterward, you will be sharing stories of the course, personal challenges, and successes. For us, as event promoters, it embodies the ALOHA spirit we experience every day on Hawai'i Island.

COURSE INFO - XTERRA TRIATHLON

Swim: Swimmers be prepared to challenge yourself with Beach Runs! The race will feature a water start following a clockwise swim course. In true XTERRA format swimmers will exit the water and run to the “Shoe Mat” near the JTL Timing tent, then swimmers will face the trail hill climb up to Transition at Hapuna Beach State Park. There are thorns and rocks in this trail run up to transition and we require all athletes to wear protective footwear for safety reasons.
Mountain Bike: The Bike Course is set as 2 five-mile off-road trail loops in the Hills above Hapuna Beach with 2 Aid Stations, 1 Bike Tech Tent, 2 Med Tents, and a WristBand Station. Rocks, Sand, Lava and KIAWE awaits. Thornproof tires are a must if you want to get through the bike course without testing your tire changing skills. Please be aware of the DISMOUNT & PORTAGE Signs on the Bike Course. All bikers must be prepared to dismount and portage their bikes in sections with these signs for safety reasons. When bikers turn onto Old Puako Road they are required to ride in the shoulder and obey all traffic laws, this road is open to traffic. The Old Puako Road section is a NO PASSING ZONE. Athletes who are caught passing will be immediately disqualified. The Bike Course will only follow Old Puako Road for approximately 200 yards before returning to the trail. Athletes who do not make the turn onto the trail will be disqualified. When making the turn for the 2nd Loop, there will be a Wristband Station, all athletes are required to take 1 blue wristband before commencing the 2nd loop. Athletes who have a blue wristband and have completed both loops will be directed to the Bike Finish and Transition.
Trail Run: Scenic and Brutal. The 2-loop 3.1mile Trail Run will not disappoint. More Rocks, Sand, Lava, and Kiawe. Plus the amazing energy of the Ocean guiding your way. There will be 1 Aid Station and Wristband Station at one of the turn around points. Runners will be required to take 1 red wristband at the Wristband Station before commencing the 2nd loop. Athletes who have a red wristband and have completed both loops will be directed to the Finish Line!
We wish you a safe journey and an enjoyable time during your stay. From the beautiful beaches, lush landscapes to our ever-changing Kilauea volcano. Your time here will be filled with memorable experiences and places that you will dream of returning to. Guaranteeing new friendships and stories to share for years to come. If you will be traveling, we recommend the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort as it will place you close to all the action.
