The greatest American XTERRA triathlete of all-time, Josiah “Beast Mode” Middaugh from Eagle-Vail, Colorado, became the 14th inductee into the XTERRA Hall of Fame at the Aloha Friday Welcome Reception at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua in Maui on December 3, 2021.

Middaugh collected 36 career XTERRA Championship race wins in his illustrious 20-year career, an unprecedented 15 XTERRA U.S. National Championships, was the first American to win XTERRA Worlds in 15 years in 2015, and was the top American at XTERRA Worlds 12 times, including nine straight years from 2011-2019.

In July of 2000, a 21-year-old named Josiah Middaugh side-stroked his way through his first XTERRA race in Keystone, Colorado and thus embarked on his childhood dream “to be great at something.”

He was great from the get-go. He won the overall amateur XTERRA National Championship in 2002, the 20-24 division XTERRA World Championship that same year, went pro in 2003, finished third in the elite race at XTERRA Worlds in 2004, and was the fastest American off-road triathlete ever since.

In his 20th race at the XTERRA World Championship in 2021, at the age of 43, Middaugh held the lead at the midway point on the bike and ultimately finished sixth overall, less than three-minutes behind Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Hayden Wilde (who just turned 24-years-old).

His family is fast too!  At XTERRA Worlds in 2021, his son Sullivan won the 15-19 division World Championship, and the day before his son Porter won the 15-19 division in the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship 21K, his daughter Larsen won silver in the 10-14 division of the Leilani’s XTERRA 3.3K Trail Run, and his wife Ingrid placed second in the 45-49 division of the Duke’s XTERRA 10K.

For his contributions to XTERRA as an athlete, friend, father, and coach, we welcome Josiah Middaugh (and his fabulous family) to a very distinguished club – the XTERRA Hall of Fame.
