Now more than ever, kids have much to gain from the sport of triathlon.
Triathlon gets kids off their screens, outside, active, and a part of something positive.
“My daughter started participating in triathlons three years ago,” said Tiffany Giese, a Forte Triathlon Club mom. “She absolutely loves the sport and the structure of training, and her coaches have made such a positive impact on her self-confidence and independence.”
Jodelle Migely, one of the Forte coaches, explained that all too often adult triathletes comment on how much they wish they would have started the sport earlier so they could have enjoyed the joy for more of their life.
“Start them young and watch them grow,” she exclaims. “Being a part of a triathlon club is a beautiful marriage between being a part of a team that encourages one another, while the act of participating in a triathlon is very much an individual effort. We know that showing up as a team makes the kids feel included, accepted and supported.”
While partaking in the discipline of racing or training, kids rely on each other, but when push comes to shove, each individual must find it within themselves to complete the training or race.
“Some days you’re the cheerleader, some days you dig deep for yourself,” added Migely. “Either way, you’re getting something more out of the sport than just the workout.”
Most people can swim, bike, and run which makes triathlon a life-long sport. A sport many kids can enjoy training for with a parent or another family member. The sport gets people outside and active. We all know the benefits of doing that- added bonus if you can get the whole family to do it together.
To find a kid’s triathlon program, it might be a good idea to check with a community-based recreation program. If all else fails, check with some local triathletes or at a store in your community that caters to the sport of triathlon. The triathlon community is worth searching for!
