The 12th annual XTERRA Beaver Creek off-road triathlon and trail running weekend scheduled for July 15-18 at Beaver Creek Resort in Avon, Colorado could be the most perfect family-friendly endurance event of the summer.
It all starts with the venue, as Colorado’s high country during the summertime is something to behold with its big blue skies, white aspens, majestic mountain ranges and cool, fresh air. It’s hard to imagine a better place to be in July than the Rockies, which boasts perfect conditions for hiking, horseback riding, ziplining, golfing, fishing, exploring, kids’ adventures …. and oh yes, XTERRA racing.
The fun starts as soon as you get there, so get there early!
On Thursday, it’s traditionally open swim night at Nottingham Lake, and new this year we’re hosting XTERRA Bike Night starting at 5pm to celebrate and ride the trails for free with local stars and XTERRA crew too. The ride starts at the XTERRA Village, all skill levels are welcome, and we’re giving away cool prizes.
On Friday, XTERRA legend and local hero Josiah Middaugh will give free tips on how to tackle the course, what to eat, what to wear, and anything else you’d need to know for the weekend at Paul Mitchell’s XTERRA University clinic.
Saturday is for the off-road triathlons, an awesome mountain challenge for all those XTERRA age groupers chasing after qualifying spots to XTERRA Worlds. For the Pros, there’s $15,000 on the line, and for the kids, a free sprint running race so they can have fun too!
Before and after all the events families can enjoy all the cool built-in activities at Beaver Creek Resort. At every corner you’ll find impeccable restaurants, bars, art galleries, boutique stores and local jewelry stores dotting the Resort’s European-inspired walkways and plaza, as well as the ever-popular ice-skating rink (open all year-round).
Then on Sunday, it’s run day. 5K, 9K, and 18K and 5x5K relay team race options located 8100 feet up in the air. The big race, which consists of two 9K laps, is a mix of sweet single track that serpentines through skyways and glades of aspen. Each lap includes 1300 feet of climbing, making it one of those races to train for and then conquer.
