In this episode of the XTERRA Podcast powered by Braveheart Coaching the “Scottish Rocket” Lesley Paterson and her husband, sports psychologist Dr. Simon Marshall, talk to Richie about the intersection of creativity and sport, the similarities of the two and how one can help the other.
“Richie has that classic Irish, pull-no-punches mentality,” explained Marshall. “His dedication to every single thing he does from filmmaking to his free time is really quite inspiring and we can learn a lot from his life experiences.”
Smyth, a one-time street fighter who earned a black belt in Kempo, spent five days in an edit bay without sleep until he realized being only in that “zone” wasn’t sustainable. So, he went full-on into snowboarding and found the fear of big jumps was just the kind of re-charge and freedom he needed to unlock a whole new level of creativity.
Aside from a fascinating look into his upbringing and his rise as a producer/director, Smyth shares stories of determination and the power of the growth mindset that will have listeners re-examining how they approach their own work-play balance.
