In this week’s training spotlight XTERRA Coach Jenny Smith talks us through some no-frills mountain bike drills to improve our cornering skills.
“On XTERRA trails there are literally thousands of turns to take so learning how to ride into and out of corners more efficiently and effectively will set you up to have a lot of fun,” said Smith, a long-time XTERRA elite and professional mountain biker.
Her advice on cornering is simple, “Lead with your eyes and follow with your body.”
With just a few bike bottles and an empty parking lot Smith demonstrates how to ride into the bottles in an athletic stance with your lead leg forward.
“As you look and lead with your hips you can open up and follow through the corner,” she explains. “Place your outside foot down to weight your corner, not your inside foot because that’ll set your weight the wrong way and cause you to lose your balance.”
For more than a decade Smith has coached individual, high school, and college cycling and mountain bike teams and she even won a silver medal at the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Championships.
