If you’re an endurance athlete and complain of fatigue, insomnia, hormone problems, anxiety, depression, bloating, or other gastrointestinal issues – you are not alone. In this episode of the XTERRA Podcast five-time off-road triathlon World Champ Lesley Paterson and her husband, sports psychologist Dr. Simon Marshall, talk about their own struggle-journey through all the health issues listed above and share what they learned along the way.

Subscribe: Apple Podcast / YouTube / Spotify / Stitcher and others.

Their primary goal was to identify the underlying cause of the problems, and that led them to Christopher Kelly, the CEO/Founder of Nourish Balance Thrive. Kelly – who is this week’s guest, uses advanced biochemical testing to prevent and reverse chronic disease, as well as optimize performance in athletes.

Meet the Guest

Podcast guest Chris KellyChristopher Kelly is the CEO/Founder of Nourish Balance Thrive, an online-based company using advanced biochemical testing to prevent and reverse chronic disease, as well as optimize performance in athletes.Chris is a computer scientist and elite/professional mountain biker who re-trained in biochemistry, health coaching and advanced lab interpretation. He has been invited to speak on many podcasts about his bad experience solving his own chronic health complaints, resulting in him quitting his job to start NBT. Chris is rapidly becoming the go-to person for advice when it comes to applying in-depth testing and lifestyle changes in elite and masters athletes to keep them performing at a high level for as long as possible. Over 2,000 athletes have been through the NBT program, from weekend warriors to Olympians and world champions, with hundreds of performance biomarkers available for each client. As well as supporting athletic performance, the team has amassed significant experience with chronic diseases such as autoimmune conditions and cognitive decline. Based on their accumulated data, the team are using machine learning algorithms to rapidly and reliably predict common problems using basic blood chemistry. The goal is to both reduce the cost to the client and automate certain elements of the process, which will decrease the barrier to entry and allow a greater number of people to participate in their own preventative healthcare.

Your Hosts

Lesley Paterson & Simon Marshall

XTERRA podcast host lesley and simon headshotLesley Paterson is a five-time world champion triathlete, professional mountain biker, coach, motivational speaker, reluctant fitness model, and foul-mouthed Scotts lassie. Growing up in Scotland, Lesley was the only girl who played rugby on an all-boys team. When boobs appeared she was banned from playing with the boys so she started competing in running and triathlon. Lesley went on to become a national champion in cross country and an international triathlete.

Dr. Simon Marshall grew up in Africa and the UK.  He spent his childhood playing rugby, soccer and tennis before finding competitive cycling.  He started training and racing at age 12 and hasn't stopped.  Simon has a bachelor’s degree in Sports Science, a master’s degree in Kinesiology, and a PhD in Sport and Exercise psychology.  He is a former Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology at San Diego State University and Professor of Behavioral Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

Simon and Lesley own Braveheart Coaching – a San Diego based company that trains endurance athletes to be faster and happier.  Together they wrote the best-selling book, The Brave Athlete - Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion (VeloPress, 2017).
