Introducing the Mezieres Method
The XTERRA Connect Series returns to France for the second Facebook LIVE interactive training session with the "Professor" Nico Lebrun and his wife, Alexandra.
In this week’s workout Lebrun guides viewers through a series of stretches based on the Mezieres Method, a physiotherapy technique created in 1947 by Francoise Mezieres designed to rebalance the different muscle and joint chains to improve posture and alleviate pain.
“These are stretches that Alex and I really do and were very important during my career and still today,” said Lebrun, the 2005 XTERRA World Champion. “For this episode Alex will perform the exercises and I will explain what she is doing, why, and how to do them correctly.”
Lebrun credits the Mezieres method of stretching for his ability to be injury free throughout his 20-year career (except crashes, he notes).
“It’s difficult to explain in English, but I’ll do my best on Sunday,” he said. “Basically, we will demonstrate the global stretching position. We will focus on three important positions, putting some muscle chains in tension and with proper breathing we will slowly stretch the entire chain. One position is for the posterior muscle chain, one for the anterior chain and arms, and one on torsion. The postures should be maintained for 10 minutes with deep breathing, while focusing on where it is stiff. Slowly, the entire chain will start to relax.”
The Lebrun’s will also show viewers how to stretch the Psoas, “a very deep, big, and important muscle that must be stretched regularly,” said Lebrun.
