While most of the nation was glued to the couch Sunday watching the Super Bowl, Art DeGraw and Megan Kupres were out blazing trails and winning the men’s and women’s XTERRA McDowell Mountain 15-miler in Fountain Hills, Arizona.
The race around beaver tail cacti and cholla fields on Pemberton Trail was the fourth of five races in the 2019 XTERRA Arizona Trail Run Series, where regional champs earn free entry into the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship 21K to be held September 15 at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah.
DeGraw, who has now won eight of the last nine races in the series since last year, took the tape in 1:35:12, more than two minutes ahead of Nick Coury in second. Matt Carson finished in third.
In the women’s race Kupres, the reigning and two-time 25-29 division AZ Trail Series Champ, crossed the line in 2:00:59. It’s her third XTERRA win in as many tries this season. Katie Stewart placed second and Ida Oesteraas was third.
The fifth and final race of the Arizona Series takes place March 10 just north of Phoenix in Black Canyon City with 6, 10, and 21K trail race options.
