Fleming Beach in front of the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, a 31-kilometer (19.2-miles) mountain bike that climbs 3,500 feet up and down the lower slopes of the West Maui Mountains, and a 10.5-kilometer (6.5-miles) trail run that traverses forest trails, and beach sand.

WHERE: At The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Maui’s northwest coast.

WHY:  The XTERRA World Championship race is the last in a series of more than 40 off-road triathlon races held in 25 countries.  The concept is to provide a bona-fide world championship for amateur and elite off-road triathletes. For pros there is $100,000 in prize money at stake.

REFUNDS: Partial refunds of $125 are available for cancellations in writing to info [at] xterraplanet.com by August 31st.

WORLD’S PREMIER OFF-ROAD TRIATHLON

This will be the 25th year for the XTERRA World Championship on Maui, the birthplace of off-road triathlon.  The first XTERRA race was held here on November 3, 1996 and was televised on Fox Sports Net.  The demand for the sport of XTERRA exploded thereafter and there are now more than 50,000 competitors from all 50 states and more than 50 countries worldwide.

WINNER TAKES ALL

It is a “winner take all” race, with one of the richest pro purses in multisport at $105,000, and it is awarded solely on the basis of the Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offers a unique opportunity to competitors as even those who have had a less than stellar season are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn the coveted title of XTERRA World Champion.

FILMED FOR TV

This will be the 25th straight year a nationally (now internationally) broadcast show will be  produced from the event, which showcases Maui’s natural beauty. The 2020 XTERRA World Championship will be seen by three million viewers on Outside TV in the USA and internationally via syndication. This year’s show will start its run in national syndication January 2021.

FUN FOR SPECTATORS

The XTERRA Spectator Village will be open in the finish area and offers fun for the whole family including a bounce house and face painting for the kids, games for everyone, live race reports, music, food and beverage and great viewing of the finish line.

Course Information

SWIM DISTANCE: 1.5-kilometers (0.93 miles)
MOUNTAIN BIKE DISTANCE: Two 15.5km loops (9.6 miles) on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains
TRAIL RUN DISTANCE: 10.5 Kilometers (6.5 miles)

The XTERRA World Championship course is perpetually evolving.  In 1996 the race featured point-to-point swim, bike, and run legs over sharp lava rocks and dry, dusty bowls on Maui’s south shore.

In 2011 the race moved to Kapalua and into wet forest trails, pineapple fields, and ridgelines high above the northwest coast on Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s private 22,000-acre oasis. Improvements to the trail structure have been made each season,  in 2019, the mountain bike course was re-imagined from one big 32-kilometer loop to two 15.5-kilometer loops to improve the race experience and minimize the impact severe weather has on the route.

The two-loop course will also route all the way on to hotel grounds to provide a much better spectator experience and a more engaging live stream for viewers at home.

The swim course remains a 1.5-kilometer rough water swim at D.T. Fleming Beach fronting the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, and once on the run competitors will be faced with obstacles everywhere, including a technical, steep downhill into a gully where racers will have to jump over and duck under fallen trees, navigate a rocky dry creek, head through thick elephant grass, and along a narrow single track trail with switchbacks that drop all the way down to the beach. The final test of skill and endurance is a calf-busting 250-meter white sand beach run.

START AND SWIM

The race starts with a 1.5-kilometer rough water swim (two 750m laps ) at D.T. Fleming Beach fronting the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua; and will feature wave starts beginning with age group men, then age group women. A short beach sprint mid-race between and triangle shaped course gives spectators a chance to pick out their friends and family from the field.

WAVE SWIM STARTS

To provide a clean race for the professional field, the elite race will start at 8am and the age group field will start at 9:00am (tentatively), which would allow elites to get on to their second lap of the bike before the first age groupers start their first lap. We tentatively anticipate four age-group waves per below, but this will not be finalized until mid-October after all entries are in.

Start Times Note: Times may change. Changes will be announced at the athlete briefing.

1 Elite men and women 8:00 AM
2 Age-group Men 39 and Under 9:00 AM
3 Age-group Men 40-49 9:03 AM
4 Age-group Men 50+, Challenged Men and Organizers 9:06 AM
5 Age-group Women 9:09 AM

TIRE CHOICE

Here is some advice from our elite racer Ben Allen on tires: A fast tread xc tire is the best with clingy edges. Maxxis ikon or Schwalbe racing Ralph are very good. Also WTB wolverine is a great tire too. These tires offer a fast rolling moderately spaced tread pattern that combines plentiful working edges that cling to hard packed surfaces and the outside knobs that let you shred the sandy & grassy corners. Top three tire brands specifically for Maui: Maxxis, Schwalbe, WTB.

COURSE PRACTICE HOURS

The course will be open, marked, and ready to ride on Saturday, October 31, simply be respectful of regular users playing Frisbee, walking dogs, jogging, etc.

The entire bike and run course is available anytime from sunrise to sunset, except Saturday during our XTERRA Kapalua 3.3k/5k/10k races from 9am-11am.  It will reopen for riding after the trail runners have cleared the course at roughly 11am.

ON ROAD RIDING

We recommend you head north from Kapalua on Highway 30 – a mile north the road turns into a winding country road with plenty of hill and gorgeous scenery. The village of Kahakola is 14 miles away.

RUN PRACTICE COURSE

The run course is part of the Village Walking Trails and is open to the public. You can run any day between sunrise and sunset except Saturday, October 26. The course will be closed until 11am for the XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs.  Follow the Red Arrows.

SWIM PRACTICE

D.T. Fleming Beach: This is where the swim will be held and we encourage you to practice on the days leading up to the race. Surf conditions can be rough.  Please obey lifeguard instructions.

Napili Bay: offers a sheltered spot for swimming and you may see turtles.

Lahaina Aquatics Center: The pool is located at the corner of Highway 30 and Shaw Street on the southern edge of the town of Lahaina, and is a 15-20 minute drive from Kapalua.  The pool is typically set for 25 meter swimming.  Admission is free and the pool is open 10am-4pm Monday – Saturday and 12-4pm on Sunday.   A Masters Swim is available for $5 fee at 5:30am Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 6:30pm Tuesday and Thursday.

TRAIN WITH WHAT’S ON COURSEGATORADE

Lemon-lime Gatorade Endurance Formula will be available on course at all aid stations. Endurance Formula has nearly two times the sodium and three times the potassium of traditional Gatorade. Newly reformulated, it now contains no artificial flavors or sweeteners and a new, lighter flavor.
