Teng is the first Taiwanese athlete to compete in the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship.
For the first time ever, athletes from Taiwan will be competing in the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Kualoa Ranch. We recently caught up with one of them, Pippen Teng, to hear what he is looking forward to about the race, how he has been training, and what he’s going to wear on race day.
Q. You live in Taiwan. Why did you decide to sign up for a race in Hawaii?
A. I competed in the 2018 XTERRA Taiwan 21K Trail Run and loved it. I placed third, which earned me a complimentary entry into the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, Hawaii. My family was so excited that my wife and daughter and I decided we would all compete in the race.
Q. How long have you been running?
A. I am a retired Marine Corps Officer in Taiwan. I’ve been retired for 25 years but I’ve loved running since it’s been a part of my military training and I still run today. Running has given me and my family a great deal of health, and it’s given me a wonderful community as well. Together with my running group – “Nan Tien Run” – I can find answers I’m searching for, whether the questions are about training or life.
Q. How many miles do you run a week?
A. Usually, I run about 100 kilometers. It’s a mix of treadmills, roads, and trails, depending on the weather. Most of my training occurs on the weekends and includes long, easy runs with friends.
Q. What are your goals for the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship?
A. I am very honored to participate in the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship as the first Taiwanese athlete. I want to bring my experience and vision back to Taiwan to attract more runners for next year, so we can all return together to participate. This year, I hope to run into the top three of the age group and make the podium for my country.
Q. What are you most excited about?
A. I want to make the podium so I can represent Taiwan on the world stage, wearing my national colors and my clothes embroidered with my country’s flag.
Q. What will you do in Hawaii after the race?
A.This is the first time my family and I have been to Hawaii, so we are staying for a full week. We are looking forward to hiking near waterfalls, driving around the island, and snorkeling in Haunama Bay. Of course, we are also going to find all the food we have been reading about, including poke bowls and malasadas!
