The XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs – held a day before the XTERRA World Championship on October 27th – are always a very special experience. Not only is it a chance to run on the same course as some of the best off-road triathletes in the world, but it’s a chance for family and friends of XTERRA “Worlds” competitors to be embraced by the magic of the XTERRA Tribe.
The XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs include the Duke’s Beach House XTERRA 10K, the Hula Grill XTERRA 5K, and the Leilani’s XTERRA 3.3K. For children under 10, there is the Kimo’s XTERRA Keiki K, which is free. Six to ten-year-olds run about a half a kilometer while keiki under five run 100 yards. Parents are welcome to join in.
For many Maui locals, the Kapalua Trail Run is an annual tradition and a great excuse to celebrate Hawaii’s healthy lifestyle.
Every year, the employees of TS Restaurants – which include Hula Grill, Leilani’s on the Beach, Duke’s Beach House, and Kimo’s – have a competition to see which restaurant is the fastest.
“It’s all about celebrating the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle with our employees and our community,” said Tammy Fukagawa, Executive Vice President for T S Restaurants.
Now, the event has grown so much that employees from T S Restaurants created a race within a race dubbed “The TS Restaurants XTERRA Challenge” in which each of the four restaurants field a team of 5 runners; and the team with the fastest cumulative time in the 5K take home the coveted TS Trophy. Last year, “The Fittest Restaurant” Award was given to the restaurant who had the greatest percentage of staff compete.
But just because the day is about embracing the XTERRA “Live More” spirit, this doesn’t mean the race is easy. XTERRA courses are always challenging and unique and the Kapalua course is no different. The trail will take you straight up, straight down, and is full of twists and turns. The race finishes on the beach and then onto the grounds of The Ritz-Carlton, just like the next day’s XTERRA World Championship.
