Alfredo Valdes Islas and Kathryn Lockwood captured the titles at XTERRA Laguna Beach on Sunday, September 9. The race helped kick off the 2019 XTERRA Season along with XTERRA Fruita, which were held on September 8th.
Valdes Islas captured the men’s race with a time of 2:26:27. Scott Callender was second in 2:40:50 and Brian Johnson was third in 2:41:33. Tyler Stover was first out of the water in 18:43, with Valdes Islas almost three minutes behind. Valdes Islas made up those minutes and more on the bike, where he had a smoking time of 1:19:54. Brian Johnson had the next fastest time of 1:23:08.
On the run, John Walsh had the fastest split with 42:01, but Valdes Islas’ split of 43:43 was good enough to hold onto first place.
For the women, XTERRA veteran Kathryn Lockwood won the race in 2:44:17 with Shannon Howell in second with a time of 2:47:59. Laura Morris was third in 2:56:29.
Like Valdes Islas, Lockwood took it away on the bike where she had a split of 1:30:14. Howell had the next fastest bike split with a time of 1:31:34. Lockwood also had the fastest run split of the day while Ingrid Bruder had the fastest swim with a time of 20:50.
Kathryn Lockwood, Laura Morris, and Heather Wilson, who finished fourth, may have used XTERRA Laguna Beach as a tune-up race before heading to the XTERRA Pan Am Championship in Utah this Saturday. Lockwood won her 40-44 age group at XTERRA Renegade in May in addition to her overall win on Sunday at XTERRA Laguna Beach. Wilson won her 20-24 age group at XTERRA Laguna Beach last year as well as in this year’s race. She was second at XTERRA Oak Mountain.
