XTERRA Fort Custer on September 30th is one of those can't-miss races. If you are headed to Maui in October, XTERRA Fort Custer is a chance to kick the tires and fine-tune your fitness. If you aren't headed to Maui, the race is a great way to stockpile some 2019 points before winter arrives. And if you are just out to stay fit and have fun, XTERRA Fort Custer is a fantastic chance to celebrate fall colors, Michigan's crisp weather, and some killer trails.
Held at the Fort Custer Recreation Area - which is centrally located between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo - the trails at Fort Custer will take you around the park's three lakes and along the Kalamazoo River. The swim in Eagle Lake will be a two-lap, clockwise, 800-meter course followed by an 11.0-mile bike ride through the more difficult section of the trails.
“The mountain bike trails are expertly maintained by the Southwest Michigan Mountain Bike Association, but it’s a challenging ride,” said race director John Ploeg. “The 3.2-mile run will traverse through wooded forests with few wide open areas. The Fort Custer Recreation area is beautiful and right now participants will get a great color ride as many of the leaves are changing colors.”
Last year, several XTERRA athletes who competed in XTERRA Fort Custer became 2018 XTERRA Regional Champs, including Tyler Guggemos, Mimi Stockton, Michael Drackert, Brad Scholtz, Kristen Wade, Chris Halioris, Chrissy Halioris, and Ralph Nurse.
