Mike Carter and Alissa Magrum captured the titles on a muddy morning at XTERRA Muleshoe on Saturday, August 11th in Spicewood, Texas on the north shore of Lake Travis.
Carter won the race in 1:50:59 but Jordan Winar was right behind him in 1:51:44. Chuck Olinger was third in 1:52:42.
Magrum won the women’s division in 2:12:03 while Alyssa Lutz was second in 2:15:29. Jeanne Hoffman was third in 2:22:29.
"Melanie Etherton wasn't here," she Magrum with a laugh.
Both Magrum and Lutz are part of “Team Do Awesome,” an all women’s team which raises money and awareness for charities such as World Bicycle Relief and Magrum’s passion water safety charity, Colin’s Hope. This year, Team Do Awesome’s goal is to raise enough money to get 115 bikes to Kenya to enable kids to get to school. Alissa will also host the annual Got2Swim Austin 10K, which will raise money for Colin's Hope.
The race included an 800-meter swim, a two-lap, 14-mile ride on shaded single track, and a 6K run.
The cedar-lined trail system included limestone outcroppings and ledges, hairpin turns, gravel washes, compressed dirt, and rock paths. This was a fast course with some technical areas including a couple of off-camber vertical stair steps along the trail.
After the race, Magrum (40-44) jumped off the podium with Lutz (50-54) and Hoffman (45-49).
"I love XTERRA," she said. "I love being out here with these strong and amazing women, who are in the older age groups and just killing it. We have so many good people that do these races. It's awesome."
