XTERRA Sprints into August
We’re in the thick of it now, at last. The grueling workouts are behind us, the berries are ripe, the sun is hot, and we are smack-dab in the middle of the best XTERRA season yet.
While many of the XTERRA Southeast Region races are behind us, XTERRA Panther Creek on July 29th and XTERRA Auburn on August 18th are still two gems to look forward to. At XTERRA Panther Creek in Morristown, Tennessee, racers have a chance to compete on one of the most rugged courses out there. There are plenty of rocks, roots, and hills on the 800-meter swim, 13.0-mile bike, and 4.2-mile run. At XTERRA Auburn, the swim will be held in Chewacla State Park’s 26-acre swimming lake, while the bike and run highlight the park’s 25-plus miles of mountain bike trails.
For those in the middle of the country, rest assured that the XTERRA Mountain and Northwest Regions are just kicking into gear. XTERRA Indian Peaks in Nederland, Colorado on July 28th takes place at the renowned Eldora Nordic Center in Eldora, Colorado. This event features a chilly 1000 meter swim in Peterson Lake, followed by a 600 meter run to the transition area, a very hilly 22K bike ride on the single track roads of the Eldora Nordic Center, and finally, a 7K trail run. While XTERRA Beaver Creek is the highest championship event in the world, XTERRA Indian Peaks is the highest of them all with a bike course that tops out at 9,648-feet.
On August 4th, in Carbondale, Colorado, XTERRA Aspen Valley gives athletes an opportunity to race on a one-of-a-kind course. After a 1200 meter swim through Kodiak Ski Lake, the mountain bike and run courses take you on exclusive 12 and 3-mile trails, respectively. This year, XTERRA Aspen Valley is offering up a SUP triathlon race as well, just in case swimming isn’t your thing.
If you are lucky enough to live in the Midwest, XTERRA is at high noon in the middle of the country. With XTERRA Ionia on July 22nd marking the middle of the season, the Midwest continues to roll with XTERRA DINO South on August 4th in Versailles, Indiana. The race features a lovely swim in Versailles Lake followed by an awesome mountain bike course on Cliffside Trail, where you can climb high above the valley below on some pretty epic single track.
In Pennsylvania, the XTERRA Atlantic Region closes out the season at XTERRA Appalachia in Penn Run on August 5th. A western Pennsylvania favorite, Yellow Creek State Park offers a rugged and rewarding venue. This year’s race will feature an 800-meter lake swim, 3.3-mile trail run on hilly and varied terrain, and approximately 10 miles of mountain biking including flowing single track, gravel trails, and short paved sections.
