The ninth of 16-stops on the 2018 XTERRA European Tour takes us to Prachatice for the 14th edition of the XTERRA Czech Championship on Sunday.

In the men’s elite race Ruben Ruzafa, fresh off winning his fourth ITU Cross Tri World title in Denmark, will face off against many of the same stars he took down on Tuesday.  Chief among them are reigning XTERRA World Champ Bradley Weiss (who was 4th in Denmark) and XTERRA Asia-Pacific Tour Champ Sam Osborne (who was 2nd in Denmark).

“After showing what he can do at XTERRA France and ITU Worlds, Ruben is definitely the ‘Boss’,” said XTERRA European director Nicolas Lebrun.  “He looks stronger than ever. He has worked hard on his swim and is now losing less time in the water, he’s still hammering the bike, and he’s running faster too.”

In the women’s elite race all eyes are on home country hero Helena Karaskova-Erbenova, the reigning and four-time XTERRA European Tour Champion.  Karaskova won XTERRA Lake Garda this year, had five wins on the tour last year, has 28 career wins in eight years of racing XTERRA, and was also a 2006 Winter Olympian in the double pursuit.

“She is my favorite here and will have the advantage of racing on home soil,” said Lebrun (you can read more from his race preview here).

While most of her competition was in Denmark on Tuesday, Karaskova tackled a mountain marathon.  It’ll be interesting to see who comes in fresher.

Her competition includes current tour leader Carina Wasle, who has been on the podium seven times in seven races this season in Europe. Nicole Walters, who is currently ranked third, was second to only Lesley Paterson at ITU Cross Tri Worlds on Tuesday.  Others of note include Kiwi Samantha Kingsford, making her XTERRA European Tour debut, Asia-Pacific Tour Champ Penny Slater who won the U23 ITU World Title on Tuesday, and the veteran “Swiss Miss” Renata Bucher.

Sam Osborne XTERRA Czech

This edition of XTERRA Czech will take place on a new course, which begins with 1500 meters of swimming in Kristanovicky Pond. It is the highest elevation pond in the Czech Republic, but the water is warm (20 – 24 C). The mountain bike course is 32K long. It involves an elegant combination of fire roads and technical elements, including singletracks and a few steep hills and three big climbs. Near the city, competitors will get to climb up to Dubovy Vrch (Hill) and ride on the ridge of the hill on a very narrow and technical singletrack. This is a challenging part of the course because athletes will be fatigued after 30K on the bike. One of the signature parts of our race is the transition area on the Rennaissance Great Square in Prachatice. The two-lap run course begins and ends on the cobblestones and tarmac of the town, but the most exciting part of the course takes place in the woods above the town. The finish line will be stretched before the Old Town hall for a traditional and spectator-friendly finish.
