XTERRA Beaver Creek Races Sunday
The XTERRA Beaver Creek 19K this Sunday in Avon, Colorado is the fourth of five races in the 2017-2018 XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series.
Runners looking to reach new heights will be in their element here in the Rockies.
“Altitude is always a factor, especially for those coming from other states,” said Steve Parker, the 2013 age-group champion for the men’s 60-64 division of the XTERRA Colorado Series. “If you live in Colorado, it’s a given and most of us are used to it.”
At Beaver Creek there are also 5k and 10k trail run options. Points for the series, however, are awarded only to the top age-group finishers in the 19K race. At the conclusion of the series, the runner with the most points in each age-group (15-19, 20-24, etc…) earns the title of regional champion and receives a free entry to represent Colorado at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship. Plus, the winners of each age group at Sunday’s 19K race will be awarded a complimentary entry into the 2018 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship to be held in December at Kualoa Ranch on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu.
“There are a lot of running series in Colorado, but what’s different about the XTERRA Series is that it leads to something,” Parker noted. “If you do well in the XTERRA (Colorado) Series, you can move on to the Nationals or Worlds, and that’s a nice incentive.”
Last year at XTERRA Beaver Creek Darren Brown and Lesley Paterson captured the XTERRA Beaver Creek 19K races with winning times of 1:15:56 and 1:25:49, respectively. Both are expected to be back on the start line to defend their titles on Sunday.
Brown, who is the channel development manager for OOFOS recovery footwear, said the thin air and steep hills turned out to be his biggest challenge.
“It was beautiful, but brutal,” said Brown, a former collegiate track star at the University of Texas who ran a sub-4 minute mile in 2008.
“Climbing a few thousand feet straight up makes you wheeze a bit, especially if you’re coming from sea level (Brown hails from the ocean town of Hingham, Massachusetts). It was incredible, though.”
The 2017-2018 XTERRA Colorado Series finale is August 5 in Castle Rock, CO with 5/10 and 20K options.
