Sergio Florian and Laurel Dudley proved once again that they are Hawaii's fastest XTERRA triathletes as they captured the XTERRA Freedom Fest off-road triathlon titles at Kualoa Ranch on the island of Oahu on Sunday, July 1, 2018.
Florian finished in 1:48:58 while Justin Kline was second in 1:53:47 and William McMahon was third in 1:59:25. Kevin Goehring, who finished fourth, was first out of the water in 18:47 with the fastest swim split of the day. McMahon had the fastest bike split and Kline had the fastest run split. However, Florian was so consistent with his three efforts that he was still over the line five minutes before the next competitor.
In the women’s race, Dudley was first out of the water and continued her streak with the fastest bike and run. She finished fourth overall for all men and women.
XTERRA Freedom Fest was first held in 2009 as a celebration of marriage between Amy Bennett and Eric Eck. Both were in the military and had engineering degrees - Eric was a nuclear engineer at Pearl Harbor while Amy was a drill instructor in the United States Marine Corps.
"As a drill instructor, I learned that the motivator motivates the motivated," said Amy Eck. "'Bennett' is my maiden name and 'Camp Bennett' became the nickname of my community. I really got that inside the off-road community, we are there to support each other. That's what 'Camp Bennett' is all about. It's just a fun athletic and fun cycle to get more people to play and enjoy the outdoors."
In addition to being engineers, both Amy and Eric Eck are holistic doctors and have business degrees - their quest for knowledge knows no boundaries, which is why they are so welcomed and appreciated by the XTERRA community.
"My goal is to get the whole community out and playing," said Amy. "How do we exercise today, tomorrow, and forever? Well, you have to invest in the family and friends you are swimming and riding and running with. If you have a community, you have accountability."
The Eck family is also into using their gifts for helping others. That's why XTERRA Freedom Fest benefits www.humanility.org and supports their orphanage in the Philippines.
"At Camp Bennett, we are committed to bringing life-enriching opportunities to people of all ages and abilities. This event is fun for the whole family, and to date, it has helped raise over $200,000 for charity! It is inspiring to see the difference we are able to make,” said Amy.
