Showtime for XTERRA in France this Weekend

It’s show-time on the XTERRA European Tour as stop No. 8 heads to the Vosges Mountains in eastern France where more than 2,000 racers, huge crowds, fan-friendly features like a monster wooden ramp, big-screen TVs, and an incredibly talented ensemble of elite athletes gather for one of the toughest challenges in XTERRA.

Sunday’s 12th annual XTERRA France Championship in Xonrupt, which combines a one-mile swim with a grueling 41-kilometer mountain bike loop and lung-busting 10k trail run, is truly one of the marquee events on the World Tour.

Weiss XTERRA

In the men’s elite race reigning XTERRA World Champion Bradley Weiss from South Africa will be racing in Europe for the first time this season.   The 2017 XTERRA European Champion will be up against an all-star cast that includes 3x XTERRA World Champ Ruben Ruzafa from Spain, winner of the last four races here in France, the reigning ITU Cross Tri World Champ Francisco Serrano from Mexico, the reigning XTERRA Asia-Pacific Tour Champion Sam Osborne of New Zealand, last week’s XTERRA Switzerland winner Arthur Forissier and XTERRA Belgium Champ Francois Carloni from France, XTERRA Lake Garda Champ Arthur Serrieres, last year’s France runner-up Yeray Luxem from Belgium, and Aussie Ben Allen, who has 18x World Tour wins to his credit, among many other contenders.

“The big question is if anyone can beat Ruben Ruzafa,” said XTERRA European director Nicolas Lebrun (you can read the rest of his predictions here).  “This long, hard mountain bike loop suits him perfectly, and he’s posted the fastest bike split here each of the last four years. Still, this year the new generation of XTERRA stars have gotten stronger and I can’t wait to see what “the Arthurs” can produce here, especially Forissier, who had a fantastic race last weekend in Switzerland.”

In the women’s elite race two-time XTERRA World Champion Lesley Paterson from Scotland will see what she can do against some of the best Europeans, including Euro Champ Brigitta Poor from Hungary who already has four wins this year.  There’s also tour leader Carina Wasle from Austria, 4x XET Champ Helena Karaskova from the Czech Republic, and recently crowned XTERRA Asia-Pacific Tour Champion Penny Slater from Australia.

“Lesley will be tough to beat as she knows and respects this race, and won here two years ago,” said Lebrun.  “However, if Poor can stay mentally tough, she could be a threat. She has four wins already this year, and finished ahead of Lesley in Maui last year, which may give her the confidence she needs.”
