On a hot morning in Knoxville, Tennessee, Peter Migun and Karen McNeany claimed the off-road half marathon titles at XTERRA Knoxville on Sunday, June 2nd.
Migun covered the course in 1:45:33, over six minutes ahead of runner up Dave Kesterson, who finished in 1:51:43. Nathan Feaster was third in 1:52:03.
Karen McNeany finished first for the women and 10th overall in 2:13:55. Angela Sellers was behind her in 2:14:39 and Katie Peterson was third in 2:25:01.
XTERRA Ambassador, Nate Helton, who finished 7th overall and first in his 30-34 age group, was especially impressed with McNeany’s performance.
“As always, I’m floored by the wonderful athletes that XTERRA races attract,” said Helton. “The overall women’s winner, Karen McNeany, is a phenomenal athlete. I’ve gotten to know her over the years, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t try to mimic the level of tenacity and discipline she utilizes.”
Helton used XTERRA Knoxville as stepping stone back from injury.
“I sought to just enjoy the friendly faces on the trail and had no expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised to have won my age group, and especially among such talent that showed up to race. I’m running pain-free, but you have to get those legs used to the demand again, right?”
Nate Helton will be at the XTERRA Panther Creek Half Marathon on July 28th. He had planned on running XTERRA Nationals in September, but he and his wife are expecting their first child then, so expect the Helton family in Utah in 2019.
XTERRA Knoxville also featured a four-mile race, which Brent Waugh won in 39:37. Robert Taylor was second in 39:41, and Matthew Peterson was third in 43:11. In the women’s race, Natasha Lawrence took the title in 49:50. Nicole Shuey was second in 55:52, while Andrea Rickard was third in 56:44.
