On June 3rd, Caleb Baity and Sue Finney claimed the XTERRA Knoxville titles on a hot and humid morning.
Baity, who won the 25-29 division at XTERRA Oak Mountain on May 19th, crossed the finish line in 2:10:01. Kevin Fletcher finished in 2:25:40 and Brad Scholtz was third in 2:26:52.
Jackson Scott (DNF) and Emma Coakley came out of the water within half a minute of each other, followed by Roberto Flor and Michael Greenlee. However, Baity’s time on the bike was good enough to slingshot him into the lead. Only Joseph Urbanowicz, 15, was faster on the run, which was good enough to land Urbanowicz in fifth place overall.
For the women, Sue Finney crossed the line in 2:40:50 with Leslie Trussler in second in 3:14:07. Emma Coakley finished third in 3:16:36.
At last week’s XTERRA Oak Mountain, Finney finished third in her 35-39 age group, and once again proved her skill. She came out of the water with the first third of the competitors (men and women combined) and like Baity, proceeded to tear it up on the bike. She had the fastest bike and run splits for the women and finished tenth overall.
Jim Dandro, who made it his goal to qualify for the XTERRA World Championship in Maui, finished second in his 50-54 age group at XTERRA Knoxville.
“It was muddy but nothing compared to Charlottesville 2 weeks ago,” said Dandro. “My wife and I have bought our flights, reserved the hotel, rental car, and a bike in Maui. It’s non- refundable on flights and the room so we'll be there. Many of our friends are now tracking my progress towards Maui so the pressure is on for sure.”
