At XTERRA Gator Bait on April 29th, several local Houston families showed that talent does indeed run in the family.
In the half-marathon trail run, Luis Murillo was the day’s champ in 1:31:42. His brother Gustavo Murillo was the runner up in 1:34:03, while Robert Lopez was third in 1:45:17. Lopez is a regular on the XTERRA Texas Trail Run circuit and won his 40-44 age group at XTERRA Pedernales, XTERRA Bluebonnet, XTERRA ATX, and at XTERRA Gator Bait.
In the women’s half marathon, Emily Newton Hayes was the day’s champ in 1:58:51. Jennifer Bullen was second in 2:02:05, and Morgan Hoffman was third in 2:11:39.
The half-marathon race consisted of two 15K laps. In the men’s 15K, Derek Schaaf won in 1:08:35 by over 14 minutes. Steve Sievert was next in 1:20:54, and Clark Hoffman – Morgan’s husband - was third in 1:22:09.
In the women’s XTERRA 15K, Paige Holland finished first in 1:15:37, Emily Garner was behind in 1:22:16, and Sarah Getty-Phelps was third in 1:28:21.
“What a wonderful race,” said Holland, who also won the 25-29 age group. “Y’all did a great job of marking out a clear course to follow for the 15k. It was a very encouraging and supportive environment and I hope that I am able to run it again next year.”
In the 5K, sisters Kaytlynn and Heather Welsch were not only the 15-19 champs, and the women’s champs in the 5K, but they were the overall champs as well. Kaytlynn Welsch finished the 5K in 22:41, Heather finished in 24:36, and Jordan Kennedy was third in 27:15.
In the men’s 5K, Liam Hebral was the 10-14 age group champ and men’s champ in 25:33. David Bendezu was second in 26:02 and the third Murillo - Jose - was third in 27:08 and won the 60-64 age group.
