This weekend, on March 25th, the XTERRA Wellington Trail Run Series springs into action at the West Wind Recreation Centre in Makara Valley, New Zealand. This is the first race in the five-event series that continues until June 10th.
The West Wind Recreation Centre is one of the most advanced wind farms in the world. The center is home to incredible trails such as pine needle tracks through forests, to coastal trails that hug the Cook Straight as it crashes on the rocks, to ridge lines 25 kilometers away from the South Island.
The XTERRA Wellington West Wind offers an 18K race, a 12K course, and a 7.5K fun run. The “long” course is the most technical with terrain changes every two to three kilometers and three short, sharp climbs. The “medium” course is similar but only includes three climbs, and the “short” course includes a mix of easy terrain and beautiful landscapes.
“Wellington is the home of New Zealand’s wild weather, hills, and coastlines. XTERRA Trail Running will give you the opportunity to experience all that the nation’s capital can throw at you,” explains the Wellington organizers. “The XTERRA Trail Runs will leave you with memories of breathtaking views, jagged coastlines, lush native forest, and some of the best after match stories you will ever hear.”
On April 15th, the XTERRA Wellington Series continues at McKerrows Revenge in the Orongorongo’s, heads to the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park on May 5th for the Starlight Makara, continues on May 20th with the Woolshed Run in Belmont, and finishes on June 10th in Owhiro Bay with the Red Rocks Race.
