On March 24th, the 16th annual XTERRA Real Off-Road Triathlon will open the 2018 XTERRA season for the West Region. The race takes place at Granite Beach on Folsom Lake in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s just east of Sacramento, California.
“XTERRA Real is definitely an XTERRA tradition,” said race director Mark Shaw. “Some of our previous years’ champs include Jamie Whitmore, Lesley Paterson, Emma Garrard, Melanie McQuaid, Mike Pigg, Ben Hoffman, and XTERRA commentator Whit Raymond.”
This year, look for Tim Helms - who placed fourth in 2016 - as well as XTERRA elites, Kara LaPoint and Jessie Koltz, who placed 13th and 17th respectively at the 2017 XTERRA World Championship.
Nick Diaz, professional MMA fighter will also be racing. He has previously said that he uses triathlon training as a way to get into top shape.
Rather than being named for the place it’s held, the race gained its moniker “Real” because race director, Bill Driskill, wanted an off-road course that felt authentic.
The venue of XTERRA Real is ideal, with parking next to both transition and the expo. The swim will be held on the Main Beach, the mountain bike loop heads to the north, and the separate run loop heads to the south.
“The courses are in great shape this year,” added Shaw. “The mountain bike and run are smooth, fast, flowy, single track through forested oaks, pines, firs and buckeye trees along the shores and rolling hills along Folsom Lake. While the course is beginner-friendly, expect technical sections for the experts, including sand, rock scrambles, hill climbs, and fast descents.”
Shaw also added that the water temperature could get up to as high as 60 degrees - which is practically balmy for northern California - because of a lack of snow melt.
XTERRA Real is the first of five races in the West region this season. After Real, West region races include favorites like XTERRA Renegade in San Dimas, California (May 6), XTERRA Dueces Wild in Arizona (June 10), XTERRA Tahoe City (June 16), and the 2018 West Region finale at XTERRA Lake Tahoe in Incline Village, Nevada on August 19. Then, for those looking to get an early jump on points for next year, XTERRA Rockhopper in Arizona is a great fall race which will count towards 2019 points.
