XTERRA New Caledonia is a trail run in paradise. You will experience beautiful views, magnificent beaches, and epic sunsets. And because this is XTERRA, you get to earn this beauty over tough climbs, technical single track, and 22 gorgeous kilometers of trails.
A French territory in the South Pacific, New Caledonia is a gorgeous archipelago of islands located about 750 kilometers off the coast of Australia. Emma Kraft, who finished fifth in the 2017 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, is traveling 3500 kilometers from her home in Alice Springs, Australia to run XTERRA New Caledonia.
“Last year’s course nearly killed me,” said Kraft with a laugh. “It’s a very technical course and some of the terrain is so rough, you can only hike it.”
Being an XTERRA warrior, Kraft is returning this year for more of what the course can dish out. Last year Kraft won the Oceania Trail Run Championship, which was held on the same trails as this year’s XTERRA New Caledonia. A 12K and 7K race/walk, and a kids run will also be held on May 26th, for athletes who want to experience the beauty of the islands at a shorter distance.
The XTERRA New Caledonia course will be held on the island of Grand Terre in the city of Paita, which is just 20 kilometers outside the capital city of Noumea, on the southeast end of New Caledonia.
Founded by wayfarers thousands of years ago, James Cook was the first explorer to find New Caledonia. While this – and the tropical weather – make New Caledonia similar to Hawaii, Grand Terre is not a volcanic island at all. Instead, it’s believed that New Caledonia separated from Australia tens of millions of years ago. As a result, the islands are home to unique and exotic birds and plants that don’t exist anywhere else in the world.
“XTERRA New Caledonia will give a chance to see a rare and beautiful part of the world on one of the most amazing trails you can imagine,” said race director, Nordine Benfodda, who added that the race will be a celebration of fitness, community, and nature.
