Going Green at XTERRA Jurassic Trail Run

Jul. 4, 2017

Despite the fact that runners will be navigating the trails by night, the XTERRA Jurassic Trail Run on July 8th is going to be a very green race.

"We will have aid stations, but they won't be stocked with cups," said race director, Kathy Duryea. "We are encouraging runners to carry their own hydration pack, which they can fill at all the aid stations on the course."

We've all run out of aid stations wondering why our competitors dropped their cups on the ground instead of the trash can just a few feet away. But, when you think of the cups stacking up in the landfills, the problem is even worse.

"We aren't just trying to make the course neater," said Duryea. "We are trying to make everyone aware that there really isn't an 'away' when we throw things away. Most trail runners are already environmentally conscious, so we think this is going to be a win for everyone."

Duryea added that she was inspired to go green in her races after attending the American Trail Running Association (ATRA) conference last year. "We attended a session on going green which we really liked and believe in."

In addition to carrying a water bottle or wearing a hydration pack, runners also need to bring head lamps, because the race will begin after sunset.

XTERRA's official sports drink, Gatorade Endurance, will be available to all competitors at the aid stations and start/finish areas.

The 5K, 15K, and half-marathon courses will all have reflective arrows on the well-marked courses. Even better, the courses will follow the paths of dinosaurs roamed in the Jurassic Era - you can still find dinosaur tracks in the bed of the Paluxy River.

The 5k will follow a trail near the river, while the 15k and 13.1 mile half marathon will explore the single track trails throughout Dinosaur Valley State Park and along the river. The trails can be rocky and technical in spots and always full of adventure.
