XTERRA Blackwater Sold Out for Third Year
XTERRA Blackwater, with competitors representing twenty states and Puerto Rico, has sold out for the third year in a row. The race is scheduled for April 1st at Blackwater River State Forest in Milton, Florida and is second in the 50 race, 30 state 2017 XTERRA America Tour.
XTERRA Blackwater headlines the weekend long Blackwater Multisport Festival, which also includes the Bear Lake Off-road Super Sprint and XTERRA 21K and 6.5K Trail Runs. Entries for these events are still available.
The man behind Florida panhandle’s XTERRA is Ben Dillon, a 10-year Navy veteran who has 30 XTERRA race finishes to his credit. “It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to produce XTERRA’s,” said Dillon. “My passion for many years was racing on the XTERRA circuit around the globe. Now that passion extends to multi-sport event production…and to be able to put this together so that others have an opportunity to enjoy what I have experienced is priceless!”
Twenty percent are first-timers to the sport, and if history repeats itself, they will join the ranks of Blackwater enthusiasts like Florida’s Wendy Ewing and Butch Houser.
“I have done road racing and road triathlon for years and was suffering from burnout,” said Wendy Ewing, 2016 XTERRA Blackwater women’s champion. “I had watched my husband and son race XTERRA over the years and decided last spring to give it a go. The atmosphere of XTERRA reminds me of the old days of triathlon, very low key, yet still very competitive. Getting out there in the dirt, mud, rocks, and whatever XTERRA throws at you, has renewed my desire to race again.”
“I did my first tri in 1986, and never raced off-road till 2015,” said Butch Houser. “It's a blast. If you have never raced on trails you are missing out on a new treat/challenge. This race is as good as anything you'll find on road. Warning though - you might get hooked!”
