Washington Series Offered Something for all Runners in 2013
Pletcher, Ostrovsky prevail in finale at Lord Hill
The 2013 XTERRA Washington Trail Run Series featured a little bit of everything, except rain.
"Everyone knows it rains a lot up here in the Northwest but we actually had fantastic weather for all three of the races," said Christine Estrada, who competed in all three events in the series. "This last race was nice and cool; great conditions."
The Washington Series concluded on July 21 with close to 100 runners participating in the XTERRA Lord Hill Trail Run at Arlington, Washington.
Martin Pletcher from Sammamish, Wash., and Andrea Ostrovsky from Seattle took top honors for the 21-kilometer course. Pletcher, 21, finished first overall with a time of 1 hour, 37 minutes, 16 seconds. Patrick Wallace, who is 55 and resides in Danville, California, placed second in 1:39:52. Christopher Barry, 23, took third in 1:39:57.
Ostrovsky was the first female, and her time was 2:02:03. Mallory Brooks placed second in 2:05:28.
The course at Lord Hill featured several steep climbs and descents, which was a contrast from the previous race in the series.
"This race had a lot of climbing, so I would say it was one of the hardest races in the Series," Estrada said. "The first race was also challenging with some climbing, then the second race was flatter so it was a bit faster. Each one offered something different, and I thought that's what made this a great Series."
Estrada placed in the top three of her age group at each race in the series, and thus earned enough points to claim first place in the women's 35-39 age division for the season. She resides in Seattle, and said the three races were in locations that were 30 minutes to an hour's drive away from the city.
"They were all fairly close, so it wasn't a bad drive at all," she said. "It's a great excuse to get out of the city and see some nice trails and the great scenery we have here in the Northwest."
Estrada is one of five runners who scored enough points in the series to earn an age-group championship for the season. Each of those five runners will receive a free invitation to represent Washington at the 2013 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at the Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah, on September 22.
The 2013-14 season for the XTERRA Washington Trail Run Series is scheduled to begin on October 12. To register for a race in the series or to learn more about it, please visitwww.nwtrailruns.com.
