Beaver Creek Trail Run is Family Friendly Race
Quinn family will have five on start line
The XTERRA Beaver Creek Trail Run is a race for anyone and everyone, and the Quinn family is a good example.
This year's XTERRA Beaver Creek Trail Run is set for July 21 at the Beaver Creek Resort in Avon, Colorado, and it will feature a 10-kilometer course and a 5K course, both open to runners of all ages and abilities.
Five members of the Quinn family are registered to run: Don and his wife, Mollie, and three of their children - DJ (15), Summer (10) and Aidan (9). Another sibling, Devin (14), will serve as the "support crew captain," and his duties will include preparing breakfast for the family and taking photographs during the race.
Don said the family tries to train together, but they are not considered an ultra-competitive family. He said the Beaver Creek Trail Run is a perfect event for the family because it offers both a 10K and 5K. Don, Mollie and DJ plan to run in the 10K, while Summer and Aidan will enter the 5K.
"For the altitude we'll be facing, we probably don't train often enough," Don said. "But when we do, we try to keep it fun. The plan right now is for everyone to run his or her own race. This will be the first time for our youngest and the third time for our second-youngest."
The Quinns are a recognized family in many of the Colorado Rocky Mountain trails, mostly because they spend their summers there as volunteers. This summer, the entire family is volunteering at Golden Gate Canyon State Park in Golden, Colorado. They are also part of the XTERRA Trail Run Ambassador Team.
"We are excited to be XTERRA Trail Run Ambassadors," Don said. "Through our volunteer jobs we have the opportunity to meet with many hundreds of trail runners, share trail information, and discuss training tactics and races. Trail runners are some of the nicest and most interesting people we meet in our travels."
The Quinns are also known as a traveling family because they drive around the country in a RV, often stopping to run or bike on different trails in different states. So far, they have crossed through nearly 20 states in the past three years.
They have also stopped the RV to compete in previous XTERRA Trail Run races in Arizona, Colorado and Nevada.
"We are somewhere in the mountains of Colorado for the summer, and it won't be a long drive to Beaver Creek the night before the race," Don said. "We are volunteering the day before at a state park, so it will be a late night for us. Thankfully, we will stay with some friends, so we don't have to worry about setting up tents in the dark."
