2012 Mr. XTERRA – Jay Heller
Every year at the Night of Champions dinner on the eve of the XTERRA USA Championship XTERRA recognizes “Mr. XTERRA”, an award given annually to a member of the XTERRA Tribe that exemplifies the spirit of the sport – the challenge, commitment and camaraderie that is the essence of our sport.
On Friday, September 21, XTERRA honored Jay Heller as the 2012 Mr. XTERRA award winner.
In 1997, fifteen years ago, XTERRA first met Jay at the 2nd annual XTERRA World Championship on Maui. He can be excused for missing the first one, as he didn’t know about it, but since then he has raced every World Championship but one, as he was out with a broken collarbone. He is active in a variety of endurance sports - has competed in the longest and largest single day road bike race in America (206 miles in one day) and survived the Hawaiian Airlines Double (Ironman and XTERRA Worlds back to back) in 2009.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in business administration with an emphasis in finance, and after college went into business with his father, with whom he co-owns a real estate development and property management group. He has more than 20 years of construction experience, a real estate broker’s and property management licenses.
He is focused on building value in his community and has tirelessly volunteered for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society – a cause he is personally committed to.
He has been a frequent donor to the XTERRA Foundation, but his biggest contribution to XTERRA has been support for the XTERRA West Championship at Lake Las Vegas. For the past three years, he has solicited the participation of local companies, promoted participation to local tri and running clubs, donated space at his warehouse for XTERRA shipments, stored our big rig between events, and just about anything else you can think of …except race it… as he prefers to help out with race operations. As a result, he did not qualify for the USA Championship– but came to Utah to support his friends and family and took part in the XTERRA Utah open race.
He is a dedicated family man. His three children are well known to the XTERRA family – and frequent trail run competitors. We have seen them all on the podium many times. His twin sons conquered the 5K at 4-years-old…went on to compete in the 10K at 6-years-old, and one of them is now begging for permission to run a half marathon! They are truly an XTERRA family.
For his service to the XTERRA community and for truly embodying our “Live More” Spirit – XTERRA is honored to present the Mr. XTERRA 2012 award to Jay Heller.
