Forget the glitz and glamour, the XTERRA Tribe is headed to Vegas for the dust and dirt of the XTERRA West Championship off-road triathlon at Aston MonteLago Village Resort in Lake Las Vegas on April 14.
The Strip will make for a fine post-race party spot but before hitting the slots racers will have to head to Henderson for a showdown that entails a one-mile swim in Lake Las Vegas, an 18-mile mountain bike up, down, & around the expansive and private desert surrounding the resort, and a 6.2-mile trail run that will test the endurance and determination of even the fittest athletes.
This race is the first of four regional championship races in the nationwide XTERRA America Tour that boasts 70 races in 35 states. There is $10,500 in prize money for pros and 46 qualifying slots into the XTERRA World Championship up for grabs to amateur racers.
Aside from the championship race there is also a half-distance XTERRA Sprint race, relay team competitions, and 5, 10, and 21km trail runs. In addition, the best Paul Mitchell stylists in Nevada will be onsite giving haircuts in exchange for a $15 donation to the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
“There could be no better place to kick off the U.S. championship season than at Lake Las Vegas,” said David Nicholas, the managing director of the XTERRA. “Whether you gamble or not, Las Vegas is one fascinating place. The lights, the shows, the restaurants are absolutely world class, and we have an XTERRA race at a first class resort just minutes from the Strip and the airport. This event will be epic.”
The course itself is nothing short of spectacular, a virtual moonscape with the various shades of red, sand, and grey of the southern Nevada desert juxtaposed with the luxury of Lake Las Vegas Resort.
