XTERRA Camp Eagle Kicks Off Texas Start

When you think of how expansive Texas is, it’s easy to see why they consistently offer great destinations for XTERRA. There is no shortage of trails to run and bike or bodies of water to swim. Throughout the year Texas plays host to the Camp Eagle, the Bluebonnet, the Muleshoe, the Magnolia Hill, and the Cameron Park XTERRAs.

XTERRA in TexasWith XTERRA Camp Eagle just around the corner, we caught up with race coordinator Joel Grimmet to get his thoughts on this year’s race. “There is going to be a great turnout this year. We are expecting somewhere between 150 and 200 registered racers this year,” he says.

There are some heavy hitters scheduled to race on April 1st. Grimmet states, “We have already had two big names commit to the race; Nathan Winklemann and Adam Reardon.”

Winklemann is an established multi-sport competitor. He will be a serious threat for the overall title. Reardon is a Texas born and bred athlete who has done marathons, Ironmans, and now has XTERRA between the crosshairs. Look for him to give everyone a run for their money.

“Joining Winklemann and Reardon will be competitors from Texas, New Mexico, Mississippi, Illinois, Alaska, and even South Africa!” says Grimmet.

“Camp Eagle is true Texas hill country. The swim is in the Nueces River that is spring fed, with the headwaters located just above Camp Eagle. The mountain bike portion offers some of the best climbing of all the Texas XTERRAs and the run gives athletes spectacular views of some of the most rugged parts of the hill country,” explains Grimmet.
