The Xterra Trail Run Philly Series once again offered a unique opportunity for runners to experience some of the various trails in Eastern Pennsylvania.
The 2010 Philly Series featured five races, including four evening runs. The series concluded with the XTERRA Bear Creek Xduro Trail Run in July, and more than 150 runners participated.
“The season went very well,” series director Don Morrison said. “We tried to mix it up, have some shorter courses and some longer courses, and there was a lot of good competition at every race.”
Morrison said he scheduled four evening runs so as not to conflict with other running events in the area. The Philly evening races started around 7 p.m. during the summer months, so the runners got to compete just before the sun was setting.
“There are four or five races on any given weekend here,” he said. “We want to encourage as many runners as we can to participate in the XTERRA Philly Series, so hopefully by having some of our races in the evenings, that will bring out more runners.”
Several elite runners from Pennsylvania participated in the 2010 Philly Series, including Glenna Champion , Charity Burkhart, Jory Wamsley and Bianca Simpson in the women’s field, and Dan Dix, Greg Linsky, Derek Schultz and James Rayburn in the men’s field.
Rayburn, who is from York, Pa., entered all five races in the 2010 Philly Series and placed first in the men’s 45 to 49 age group at each race. He also placed among the top seven overall at every race in the series.
Morrison said the Philly Series is expected to have five races again on the 2011 schedule.
