Ohio SeriesThe XTERRA Ohio Trail Run Series might have been in its first year in 2010, but it had an experienced look.

Runners in their 40s and 50s were commonplace at the top of the overall standings at each of the five races in the 2010 Ohio Series.

“I don’t know why that is, but it’s great to see,” Ohio Series director Joe Jurczyk said. “There are just a lot of really good older runners in the area and they showed it.”

One example is Dominic Wyzomirski, a 50-year-old from Hampton Township, Pa. Due to travel issues, he was only able to compete in two races in the Ohio Series. However, he made quite an impression in both races.

At the Chapin Forest Trail Run in June, he placed second overall. Then at the season-ending Oak Hill Trail Run on Aug. 21, Wyzomirski finished first overall, beating all the 20-, 30-, and 40-somethings.

“I love trail running and I always seem to run well in trail races,” he explained. “I was in about fourth place halfway into the race when we came to a long hill, where I passed everyone in front of me and was able to build a little lead.”

He was not the only experienced runner to have a good race at the Oak Hill Trail Run. The top 15 overall runners featured four runners age 50 or older, and five runners age 40 or older.

What’s more, the first female finisher was 48-year-old Joan Cottrill, who is from Cuyahoga Hills, Ohio. She entered four of the five races in the series and finished first overall twice.

The 2010 Ohio Series featured five races, each offering a different challenge. Two of the races featured long courses (15 kilometers and 18 kilometers), while three were shorter (a 7k and two 8ks).

“What we tried to do was put together a good example of the variety of trails in the area,” Jurczyk said. “Some of the trails were technical and challenging, and some of the others were relatively flat and easy, so the runners who were able to come out for all the races were treated to a little bit of everything.”

Jurczyk said he will likely run a similar schedule for the 2011 Ohio Series, which is scheduled to start in April. For information on the XTERRA Ohio Trail Run Series, visit www.xterraohio.com.
