The XTERRA Georgia Trail Run Series is popular with competitors, and race director Tim Schroer thinks he knows why.
“We’ve got great courses out here,” he said. “People who come and race here for the first time don’t realize how pretty it is until they see it.”
Tara Mooney can attest to it, although her treks through the Georgia trails are much faster than normal.
Mooney clinched an XTERRA Regional Championship in 2010, her second consecutive year as the top female runner in the Georgia Series.
“I do road races almost every weekend when I’m not doing trail races,” said Mooney, 27. “And I like the trail races a lot more.”
Mooney capped her successful season with a victory at the XTERRA Deep South Trail Run on June 5 at Jackson, Ga. It happens to be her favorite course in the series.
“It’s just a pretty trail,” she said. “There are a lot of trees and you go right by a lake.”
Mooney’s success can be traced to a lifetime of running. Most notable, she was a distance runner at Kennesaw State, and is currently sponsored by Aquaphor.
Over the past two years, Mooney has won 10 races in the Georgia Series, including four in 2010. She has qualified to represent Georgia at the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on Sept. 18 at Bend, Ore., but said she will not be able to attend.
The 2010 XTERRA Georgia Series featured six races, and drew more than 700 total runners.
“It’s really exciting to see all those people next to you on the starting line,” Mooney said. “But what I notice is that you see a lot of the same people from race to race and so you become friends.”
Race director Schroer said the 2011 Georgia Series will again feature six races. “We get nice numbers in Georgia, and we hope to continue to grow,” he said.
