Alabama SeriesJust two years ago, the XTERRA Alabama Trail Run Series had a total of three races on its schedule. This year, the Alabama Series will offer six races for runners.

“I think what that tells you is that there are a lot of runners who want to participate in races in Alabama,” said series director Tim Schroer. “We’ve seen it grow every year, and think it can grow even more.”

Alabama has some of the most scenic – and challenging – trail systems in the Southern United States, and runners of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate in the XTERRA Alabama Trail Run Series.

“There really is something for everyone in this series, from experts to beginners,” Schroer said. “And every venue offers a different challenge, so runners will have to be ready each time.”

The race distances in the Alabama Series will vary from a 5K to a full-marathon 42K. Two races in the series will be held at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama, and with good reason. Oak Mountain was recently rated as one of the Top 25 Trails In America by Runner’s World Magazine.

Oak Mountain Mud RunThe first race at Oak Mountain is in November, and then the series returns there for the season finale in May. The May event is especially popular because it will offer four distances – 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K. That event also serves as the season finale, so the overall champions from the series are determined at that race.

Two new events were added to the Alabama Series this year – the XTERRA Red Mountain Trail Run in October, and the XTERRA Coldwater Mountain Trail Run in December. “Having two new races in the mix this year will surely make it interesting,” Schroer said.

Points will be awarded to the top runners in each age group at every race, and standings will be updated throughout the season. At the conclusion of the series, each age-group champion will receive a free entry to represent Alabama at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship in Utah.
