Rules and Regulations
Qualifying for the PowerSox U.S. National Snowshoe Championship
Competitors must be a member of USSSA prior to competing in the qualifying race.
- The top 10 Overall "USSSA Member" finishers in the Junior Boy's and Girl's 5km and Senior Men's and Women's 10km events will qualify for the 2008 National Championships.
- PLUS – the top 5 "USSSA Member" finishers in each USSSA age group; 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+
- PLUS – Any "USSSA Member" who does not finish among the overall top 10 of "USSSA Member" finishers in the Junior 5km or Senior 10km, NOR among the top 5 "USSSA Member" finishers in their age group, but does finish within 130% of their age group winners' time also qualifies to participate in the 2008 National Snowshoe Championships.
- PLUS – All current (2007) and past U.S. National Snowshoe Team members (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006) are automatically eligible to compete in the 2008 snowshoe NC's in UT, as long as their USSSA membership is current.
- Once an athlete has qualified to compete in the NC's, they are not counted again in the results of any subsequent regional qualifier event they might compete in.
Citizen 5K run/walk, Kid's Kilo and relay races require NO qualifying or USSSA membership
XTERRA Winter World Championship
There are 4 disciplines; snow running, snowshoe running, snow cycling, ski mountaineering.
Distances*: run 5K, snowshoe 5K, cycle 10K, ski 8K *distances are approximate
Sanction: XTERRA Winter World Championship is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and will require membership, either annual or one day. One day memberships available for $10.
Racing categories will be:
Open/Elite, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+ for men and women

Running Stage:
Running shoes are mandatory, spikes are allowed
Wearing a helmet during the run is not allowed
Snow shoe stage:
Legal size: Snowshoe must be a minimum of 120 square inches of functional surface and can be NO smaller than 7” wide and 20” long.
- Competitors must wear shoes during the entire stage and must cross into transition dismount area with snowshoes firmly attached to their feet. Should a competitor lose a shoe during the race he/she must step off the track and reattach the snowshoe in order to finish the race. Penalties of from 5 minutes to DQ for not wearing snowshoe.
- No poles or gear to assist are allowed
- Helmets are optional during the snow shoe stage
Mountain Bike Stage:
- Only mountain bikes are allowed, no cyclo cross bikes
- Tires with studs are allowed depending on ground conditions
- Competitors must wear a helmet during the mountain bike stage
Ski Mountaineering Stage:
- Athletes must use Skins for ascending. Boot packing, running or hiking without skis is not allowed except where the organizers may allow. These areas will be announced at the race briefing and clearly marked
- Competitors must wear a helmet during the Ski stage.
Telemark, Alpine Touring and Nordic ski equipment as well as split snowboards are permitted.
Racers must pass through the checkpoints and/or gates where their numbers will be recorded. Missing passing through a checkpoint or gate will be cause for disqualification or time penalty
Recommended that each athlete carries a backpack
Snow shoes or ski crampons are not permitted for this stage
Transition Area:
No bike riding is allowed in transition. There will be a mount and dismount line
No skiing in transition. Athletes must run/walk to transition exit and then clip into bindings.
It is legal for officials to assist athletes by placing bikes on racks and handing out equipment
OVERALL RULES AND REGULATIONS:
For any and all events at the Jury’s discretion, the following time penalties may be applied:
- There will be no feed or aid stations on any course except at transition. Carry your food and hydration with you. Water, Gatorade and Gu will be available prior to each event and at the aid station at transition.
- Missing or abandoned equipment during event : 3 minutes
- Receiving external assistance except where allowed: 5 minutes to disqualification.
- Littering: 5 minutes to disqualification
- (XTERRA Winter & Ski Mountaineering) Walking or running without skis or skating on the parallel trail: 3 minutes to disqualification
- XTERRA Winter) Running or walking without snowshoes: disqualification
- Non respect of the land marking/ course cutting: 5 minutes to disqualification
- Poor sportsmanship: 3 minutes to disqualification
- Serious damage to the environment: disqualification
- If a competitor does not pass by a checkpoint: disqualification
- If a competitor fails to round a gate on the correct side: 2 minutes or greater
- Failure to observe the security regulations at a checkpoint: disqualification
- Any action deemed dangerous or threatening the safety or proper running of the race: disqualification.
Snowboard Dash for Cash
There is one open class. No age groups, just first male, first female
All contestants will wear their race bib and take the Wildcat lift to the top – no charge.
At the top, officials will guide competitors to a start line. Contestants will take off their snowboards. At a signal there will be an approx 100 meter dash to the top of Herberts. From that point contestants will follow race markers and flags over an up and down course requiring them to boot up climbs prior to descents. The finish will be at the XTERRA Winter compound at the base of City Hill.
Ski Mountaineering Race
There will be two distances; 8K and 12K. The course will be the same for both distances. Long distance will do 1.5 laps. Total climb for short course is 2,300’, total climb for long course is 3,800’.
Starts will be mass starts with a time delay separation between long and short distance competitors of 5 minutes. Long distance will start first.
- Athletes must use Skins for ascending. Boot packing, running or hiking without skis is not allowed except where the organizers may allow. These areas will be announced at the race briefing and clearly marked
- Different colored flagging and signs will identify zones for putting on or removing skins.
- Competitors must wear a helmet during the Ski stage.
- No snowshoes allowed
Booting (hiking without skis) only allowed where specified. Should booting be specified a transition area will be marked. Skis must be firmly attached to backpack during booting
Safety straps are recommended
Telemark, Alpine Touring and Nordic ski equipment as well as split snowboards are permitted
Racers must pass through the checkpoints where their numbers will be recorded. Missing passing through a checkpoint will be cause for disqualification
Recommended athletes carry:
- 457 kHz avalanche beacon
- Avalanche snow shovel and snow probe
- Backpack with water/food

Snowshoe Races

The competitor must cross the finish line with both snowshoes firmly attached to his/her feet.
Should the competitor loose a shoe during the race he/she must step off the track and re-attach the snowshoe in order to finish the race. Running the course without one or both snowshoes attached to their feet is grounds for a DQ.
No ski-poles or running aids are allowed.
Competitors may wear a helmet
