XTERRA WINTER WORLDS FAQ

What’s the order for XTERRA Winter Worlds?
Bike, Snowshoe, Run, Ski

How do you plan on mountain biking in the snow?
Trails will be hardpacked and groomed for a few weeks prior to our arrival.  Get the fattest tires you can and use really low pressure.

Can I use tires with spikes?  What is recommended for tires?
Yes you can use spikes, but most do not.  Best set-up (usually) are fattest tires you can buy.  2.5” wide and low pressure.  Make sure you ask the pros, they will always share good info with you.  Josiah Middaugh has a nice “how to” article on xterrawinter.com

I’ve seen it called randonnee, ski mountaineering, and back country skiing.  What is it?
All the above.  Be prepared to climb and downhill in your skis.  What it isn’t  is cross country, Nordic or ski skating.  You’ll need skins to do the climbs.

What kind of ski’s should I be using?
Best if you had randonnee equipment and got into the sport.  But if you don’t want to spend the money we advise you use something with hard edges to control yourself coming downhill.

How long do you think it’ll take the winners?
Winner should be in at 2 hours

How does the $10,000 prize purse breakdown?
Top 5 men and women breakdown like this: 1-$1,800, 2-$1,250, 3-$800, 4-$500, 5-$400.  Plus, 6th place male ($300) and 7th place male ($200).

Do you have to be a pro to win the prize money?
Yes.  Triathlon and cycling pros and Olympic athletes would qualify to race pro.  If you’re not sure, write kahunadav@xterraplanet.com and plead your case (present your credentials).

What do you think the weather will be like?
Cold.  You’re at 7,000 feet at a ski resort in early March.  Should be sunny and quite reasonable during the day.  When the sun goes down, head for the bar.

Can I use any kind of snowshoe?
No.  Snowshoes have a minimum size.  See the rules and regs but they must be no smaller than 7” wide and 20” long.  And you must have them on at all times.

Do you have any suggestions on what kind of ski, snowshoe, mountain bike, shoes we should use?
Run what you brung.  This kind of event is 90% human, 10% equipment.  That being said make sure your bike is prepared and spinning free.  Snow pedaling is not easy.

Is there a place in Ogden where I can rent the equipment that I need to participate in these races?
Yes. Weber State University's Wilderness Recreation Center is offering special student pricing for XTERRA participants on their rental equipment. Contact: 801-626-6373 or visit www.weber.edu/wrc for details.

Biker's Edge is the place to rent a ride for the weekend.  $65 for a 2-day mountain bike rental for XTERRA participants.
To reserve a bike, email zach@bebikes.com or call 801-544-5300.

Can you wear a shoe with spikes?
Yes.

What are the details on the snowboard race?
Pretty much every man or woman for themselves.  Start at the top, start downhill, turn into the woods and hike it over to the next run and repeat a few times.  It should be tons of fun and I have no idea if the snowboarder or really fit skier will win.  It does pay $500 cash on the spot to the winning male and winning female so expect some biting and kicking goin on. Lift to start of the race is FREE to competitors wearing their race bib.

Do we have to pay for the parties at night, or is that in the registration fee?
Thursday night at Peddler’s there will be free coffee and appetizers for all competitors. The Friday night pre-race briefing dinner party is included in the entry fee of Saturday's race and $20 for friends, family and other event participants. You’ll get discounted dinner at select Historic 25th Street restaurants on Saturday night and there will be a discounted cover charge of $5 for athletes at Rumor’s for the party. Rooster’s on Historic 25th Street is the place to party and hang out on Sunday night.

Is there a host hotel?
Yes.  The Marriott Ogden is offering a special $89 rate (plus 11.7% tax).  Call 888-825-3163 and ask for the XTERRA rate.

Is there prize money for the ski mountaineering race?

Is there prize money for the snowshoe races?
